changing speakers

hmm i read it ,looked at it ,and im pretty handy with the cars but still a little awestruck,im thinking it would be better to fly you in, then for me to even attempt to try it, it looks way to much i hope i never blow speakers out. last car had bose system, i loved it but added new speakers to car,had issues then and it was just in trunk , nice diy but you might be hearing from me...

thanks...i was going to do it if somebody else didnt. haha :D
Are you going lazy on us Db?

My next project will be changing out the stock blue-link mirror with the one from the 2012 Sonata that has self dimming, homelink, and compass. Will be a few weeks though.
Gotta recover from the speaker change hangover. :p
Too much Tequila? Use narcotics next time, longer effect, no hangover :p

Thanks a bunch for the pics and everything. I didn't change the speakers but used your last part so I can splice the left rear speaker wire for my speaker level input on my amp.

FWIW I didn't have to take out the bottom seat, just kind of worked around it. I didn't take out the speaker but probably could have managed it. It would be easier to take out the seat in the end though.

If you use my hints I would think this is about a eight hour job. That first door took me about 4 hours but I was learning as I went and of course taking pictures and making notes. The third door took me less than a hour. The left rear panel and modifying the center speaker bracket takes a while. But doable in 8 hours.

I assume that 450 watt amp is powering all the speakers and the subwoofer?

In your opinion, how well does the stock subwoofer do? It's an 8 inch sub, right?

If I were to do your same install, and want to put in an Infinity subwoofer, I'd obviously need a 2nd amp. I've only done one install, and I had help from someone who knew what they were doing. Any advice? I already have the subwoofer. Now I just need the V and an amp. lol

Subwoofer

I will eventually change out the sub woofer but really it only supplies very low frequency sound and there is less difference in a good subwoofer and lousy one than in the midranges and tweeters. The stock one on V is ok in my book and again I will eventually change..just not my first priority. My next project is gonna be installing the rear view with homelink and self dimming.

Are the factory speakers 4ohm like most aftermarket speakers? I only ask because if they are higher than swapping the speakers could overdrive the amp and damage the system.

Also do the factory tweeters use a crossover and if so where is it located (in line passive or active in the amp)?

Last question (in this post anyway).. do you find that having a 2-way speaker in the door brings the soundstage down?

dawgster, I have a few questions, if you don't mind answering them.

I'm going to go with JL C5-650 speakers in the front and JL C5-650x speakers in the rear (might go with the C5-650 in the rear if I can figure out how to mount the tweeters) which are 2.54" and 2.59" deep from under the trim ring to the back of the magnet, respectively, if I can get them to fit.

It looks like the trim ring on the factory speaker is pretty deep, do you think I will be able to fit a 1" trim ring under the C5s to take care of the depth issue I will have?

What is the depth available under the speaker on the dash? I'd like to use a JL C5-525cw in that location which has a depth under the ring to the back of the magnet of 2.25".

Did you get a good look at the amp under the passenger seat? Does it look like it powers all the speakers so I'll have access to all the speaker wires from that location? My plan includes installing a JL XD700/5 to power all the speakers, except for the dash.

Did you ever replace the Sub? What is the available depth there? I plan on replacing the factory sub driver with a JL 8W3v3-4 which has a depth of 4.63" from below the trim ring to the back of the magnet.

Thanks, in advance, for your help.

The stock speakers plastic bracket on the front doors is not flat. It is sorta sloped. I am not sure if you put a one inch trim it will fit the circle on back of door panel that mated with gasket from stock speaker. Look at the lower right corner of pictures of back of door. You could probaly shave that plastic rign down and make it work...but I can not promise it will fit. The 1 3/4 inch speaker depth is really something you will have to deal with. If you try and open the window and it hits your speaker.....something is gonna break...

I did not even bother to measure depth on dash as lots of room. Look at my two pics of the dash with speaker out.

I have not messed with the amp. I may replace in future but it is plenty loud enough for me.

I will replace sub in future and will add it to the DYI but waiting till I can build up some more cash to blow........xmas coming up and all that

Hope this helps

Amp2000

The stock speakers are 4 ohm. The Infinity reference speakers are rated at 4 ohm but they are really 2 ohm speakers. They take into account the fact that you probaly have more than a 2 ohm resistance over the tiny speaker wires from amp to speakers to give more like a true 4 ohm resistance. Read the data on them at Crutchfield and they explain better. I have used these speakers in two cars, one truck, and my boat and had no problems with them blowing amp.

Good to know the stockers are 4 ohm.. Back in the day I worked in car audio and I know there were some premium systems that used odd impedence speakers. I'm going to be looking to upgrade the speakers in the spring and I'm trying to learn as much as I can now.

Next step is to figure out if my A/D/S separates can be made to fit.. the tweeters are big and the mid's pretty deep. I may have to have my buddy build a custom mounting solution.

Thanks a bunch for the info. I'll pull the passenger door panel off tomorrow and take a look before I purchase the first pair. The JL C5-650's are expensive and I don't want to waste my $. ;)

FYI, my last car was a Suzuki SX4 and I had to trim the ring on the back of the door panel to get everything to fit so that should work if the ring is deep enough.

I'll post a few photos showing measurements tomorrow after I take them.

BTW, this is a GREAT thread with a lot of very helpful information.
