I just bought a new (2013) Sonata 2.0T for the wife. I pulled the donut spare out of the Sonata and first checked to see if it would fit in the spare tire well of my Veloster Turbo - it does. The overall diameter looks real close to the VT's OEM regular tires.

Second, I pulled a front wheel off the VT and mounted the donut spare and checked for any interference - it spun freely.

So, now I'm shopping for an extra 2013 Sonata donut spare. By the way, the tire size is Hankook 125/80/16. Be aware there are same size Kia Soul donut spares out there that look to me to have a slightly different wheel profile that may not fit ( this comes from visually comparing my Sonata spare and an eBay Kia Soul spare tire/wheel listing. I picked up a new Hyundai jack and tool set for about $65 via eBay. So, now all I need is the tire/wheel.

RKoz thanks for taking the time to reply to this thread, if the dealer does not come up with my spare soon I will request the tire and rim from the 2013 Sonata. The spare tire kit I'm waiting for was part of my deal when I purchased the 2013 VT. chopchopO have you checked to make sure that the spare you got fit and clears the front wheel caliper as I was told by two different dealers that the spare for the non-turbo Veloster won't fit the turbo Veloster for that reason. Both dealers one I bought the VT from and one that I just called the parts department and both said they were still waiting for the production on the VT spare. chopchopO please let me know the part number to the spare tire kit you got from the dealer and what the cost was and if you checked to make sure that if fit your turbo Veloster. Thanks

 

Masterbender, I don't know if there is any variation in what Hyundai puts in the trunk for new Sonata's, but to be specific, the one I successfully test fit was from a 2013 Sonata Limited 2.0T.

 

So the spare tire is not a standard feature of the car? This is the first time I've heard of such a thing.

 

Not sure if its a country thing but I'm in Canada and my turbo came with a spare tire. Dealer told me it arrived like that.

 

If I'm not mistaken, the calipers on the Turbo and on the NA are identical back and front. So if that's the case I see no reason why the NA spare wouldn't fit the Turbo.

Front brakes on the turbo are bigger and wont clear the 15 inch donut.

 

I will check the part number on my spare for you guys. It's a 16" and not the same as an Elantra spare. A 15" one won't fit. I tried already.

 

 

Very nice thank you mtd. I got stranded in North Carolina 2 months ago because this damn car didn't have a spare so ill be building a spare setup for sure.

 

I don't believe Hyundai put spares in very many of their cars in the US. They aren't the only ones either, so don't be surprised. Ford, BMW, GM, etc, etc.

 

Seems like an unnecessary major safety violation to cut costs or something. Actually makes no sense at all now that I think about it!

 

Just so you guys dont feel to bad. My Gt500 didn't come with a spare either because ford felt it was to expensive to make a donut that clears brembos.

 

Hyundai isn't. My genesis came with a spare. It looks like a giant wagon wheel lol.

 

This has become standard for most cars over the last couple of years. The main reason is to reduce weight. They still provide a run flat kit so that you can get the car off the road and to a service station.

 

Plus basic roadside assistance as well..

My dealer said spares for other models, even the VNA, won't fit. I have tried to find a place in Canada that sells the spare, but no luck. Has anyone else thought to check Canadian sources and been successful?

 

I took delivery of my new red VT on Friday 11-9 at 6 pm. By 9 pm I had a flat. I thought that I'd just get out the wheel lock key, jack and spare to change the tire. NOT! I was flabbergasted to not find a spare tire. To think that one would need a tow every time one got a flat is ludicrous. Shame on Hyundai and the dealer as I was never informed that there was no spare tire. In any case, I called the dealer and purchased an entire kit consisting of the jack, tire and wheel, and lug wrench. All, according to the parts manager, fit into the VT rear wheel well. As I was tired of dicking around with this crap I just paid what they asked - $299.99 + tax. I am disappointed in Hyundai for forcing buyers to pay extra for a spare.

This is not a Hyundai specific issue, many manufacturers are going this way and will continue to do so for the cost and weight savings. Same answer here as your other rant.

It's the sign of a lazy dealer if they didn't prep the car and go through things like the compressor flat fix kit.

Just because Hyundai chooses to join other irresponsible manufacturers in not providing a spare does not excuse them; Using tire sealant - I'm informed - is detrimental to a tire and the tire must be replaced. If a small puncture causes a flat do you want to pay $200.00 for a new tire? I do agree that the dealer - whether lazy or forgetful - should have covered this issue when delivering the car. My wife just bought a new car - 2013 - and it comes with a spare tire. I am still disappointed with Hyundai and if you could take a poll on this site regarding this specific issue I'm quite sure most others would be disappointed as well..

 

For the record, tire sealant is NOT detrimental for a tire. Or TPMS as well.

A steel wheel with a decent tire on it could be easily found at a auto wrecker for under $100. A Hyundai jack and tool kit on ebay for $50.

 

I am very surprised to see this is a problem. I just bought a 2015 Veloster Turbo 2 weeks ago, and to tell the truth, I was actually GLAD they didn't include a tire.

It's a WASTE of space and a REAL pain *IF* you need to change the tire.. ALL of my last cars (which has been exactly twice in 32 years of driving...) I use a puncture seal and fill the tire, and drive it rather than swap a spare.

ALWAYS thought that was utterly STUPID and archaic to CHANGE a tire that you will end up REPLACING anyway?

Let me ask a very simply question, how often have you changed a flat? Yeah how about once in a blue moon.. not to mention many NEW tires are run flats..

Having a spare in the trunk is akin to having an extra rear view mirror for "just in case".. as someone already stated, it's 100 bucks.. yeah so GO BUY ONE!

you never stop to consider there is a GOOD reason for doing this? As someone ALSO stated we probably ALL have road side assistance, I know I do my insurance company provides it, my car (NOW) provides it.. and my phone has it (with my plan) so do we REALLY need to change the spare?

NO! get it towed.. it's FREE! I am really trying to understand what a SPARE is really for?

I work in IT, we have spare hard drives in a RAID, don't understand that either, a RAID allows for 2 failed drives.. why keep a spare drive \ tire around when something goes wrong you replace it, it can be done in MANY case in less than 4 hours, so really the SPARE is just tradition and it freaks people out for NOT having one?

MTD, I have not been able to track the part number in your picture. Hyundai does not recognise it. Where did you get your spare? Better yet, where can I get one?
I am confused that Hyundai claims to be working on a spare for the VT but you and others claim that tires/wheels that "fit" are available.......

 

Because my car is Canadian, our V comes with a spare. Im going to guess that the part # is different in the US.

A Sonata steel wheel will fit. There are a few people using them for winter wheels. You could even use a non-Hyundai steel wheel as long as the specs are similar.

In 4 years I never used the spare that came in my Dodge Charger.I doubt I'll miss it in this car.

 

In true north of the border fashion here in the GTA, but "you never know"... Let's keep that spare, just in case... We do have roadside assistance for the first how many years? I think we have a little too many, just in case resources...

 

In the what it's worth department...my 2011 SRT Challenger, 2004 SRT Crossfire, 2004 SSR, and 2013 Turbo Veloster...none came with spare tire. At first I was a little concerned. However haven't ever needed a spare on any of them. I do carry a tire repair kit in each of them though.

 

seems pretty lame doing away with the spare, it's hard to believe.. a sealant kit in the place of a spare? lol.. if you have a problem on the road it's normally a blow-out kind of thing.
