Got the base because I didn't want the sunroof and I liked the 17" wheels. I actually prefer the matte black trim on the exterior as well because I think it is going to wear better and matches the finish on the "hidden" door pull. For whatever reason, the base also felt like it had a little livelier acceleration than the style/tech package I test drove. If the base had the upgraded interior like the leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter, plus the softer armrests, it would be perfect for me. I was really looking to spend the least amount of money on a good economical commuter when shopping and thought the Veloster had the most bang for the buck in that regard. I do think the style package for some people is a pretty good deal because it gives you a lot of extras for the money (upgraded interior/exterior, leather wrapped steering wheel and shifter, 18" rims that I think look better than the tech rims, sunroof, upgraded stereo etc...) I don't think the tech package is worth the additional 2k over the style package. That said, If I was going to shell out an extra 4 grand for the options of the style/tech over the base, I would wait for the turbo and do it right.
