"Initializing Bluetooth Handsfree"

I've had my Veloster for about seven months now. Less than 5000 miles (which includes a trip from Cincinnati to Baltimore/DC)..so I don't drive it a ton. However, I do drive it enough that I want my bluetooth to work with my iphone 4s. I've posted on this issue before and it didn't seem that many people had the same problem as I did.

However, I got a notice from Hyundai that until my headunit was updated, I wouldn't have any Bluelink functionality. In fact, I found a $100 credit in my account from them when they suspended it. I'm so thoroughly confused. I even called Hyundai about it and they're not sure either. So I make an appointment to get a new update (I got one a few months ago that did not help my bluetooth problem) along with an oil change.

Imagine my surprise when not one, not two, not three people - but FOUR other people are at the dealership complaining that their Bluetooth doesn't work (on various models of Hyundai vehicles - I was the only Veloster). even one of the techs came out and said "Oh not another bluetooth issue!" So anyway - the guy I check in with says "Oh yeah, you'll just need a Bluelink update and you'll be fine" and I say "You know, I don't really think that Bluetooth functionality and BlueLink go hand in hand, but ok." So my son and I wait for a while and finally he comes back and says "We're gonna have you talk to our Service Manager. He's our expert in all things related to Bluetooth". The Service Manager comes over and says "Umm. You don't need an update, you're up to date. Let me show you some things on your car and how to work it. I'm sure you're just missing a step or two". I start to say something but he just walks off towards my car.

I tried hard not to get pissed because I despise when people automatically assume I'm some kind of an idiot who doesn't know how to use my "systems". I maintain my composure, trying hard not to call him an asshat and I follow him off to my car.

So we get in the car and he says "Ok, now show me your phone" So I show it to him and he says "Well you don't even have the bluetooth on!" and I said "Why wouldI keep it on when I have no car to pair it up to?" and says "WEll yeah but how do you expect the car to know that there's a phone available?" And I say "Look, it doesn't matter what freaking kind of phone I have. I can't get to the bluetooth functions. It doesn't work" and he starts pressing buttons and the response from the system just kept saying "Initializing Bluetooth handsfree" and then did nothing else. So he says "You need to unpair the phone with the car and everything and then reset it up" and I said "Well that would be swell but how can I do that if I can't get to the functions that I need to be able to do that? I can obviously remove the car from my phone which I've already done...but well not the other way around" and he says "Well, you know you have to have your phone off" and I said "Really? That's an interesting concept. I have to have my phone OFF so I can get into the Bluetooth settings screen on the CAR. Huh."

At this point, I'm peeved and my son is standing next to me and he says "Mommy, don't get mad." and then he looks at the service manager and says "My mom knows what she's talking about, sir". Which made me at least laugh and cool off a bit, I don't want to leave my son with the impression that his mom is some kind of hotheaded asshat who just goes off for no apparent reason.

Then he wants to reset my headunit so I'm like ok, you go ahead and do that. I've done it multiple times. So he does it and surprise - SAME thing. Then he says he wants me to leave the car and my phone and they'll take a look at it. I said "no I'm not leaving you my phone for an unspecified amount of time so you can see if you can get into the bluetooth settings. They're not related. I should be able to get into the bluetooth settings no matter how many freaking phones I've got in my pocket or which phones I've got. If I had the thing set up to auto-connect, it should attempt to do that on start up and send me a failure message if the phone isn't there. Then I still should be able to get into the Bluetooth settings screen. "

Clearly, I'm frustrating him - which admittedly, I'm hot under the collar so I'm sure my tone was less than congenial. So he wanders off to confer with some other guy and then comes back and says "Yeah, we're gonna have to get on with Hyundai technical support. I see now what you're saying. So we'll make you an appointment to bring the car in and you'll get a loaner until we can get it fixed."

I've been telling and showing them this for seven months and I kept getting told it's a BlueLink issue. Now perhaps it has something to do with the hardware/software from Bluelink. But interestingly enough you should be able to use your Bluetooth without ANY Bluelink subscriptions. At least thats what Hyundai told me, that's what I read in the manuals and that's how most other cars are.

Does anyone else have this problem? I've posted on here about it before and didn't get anywhere really. I've tried to go to the car with multiple phones - but if the bluetooth setup for the car is not accessible - who cares what kind of phones you have with you? Or not turned on. Or turned on. Or hanging out in the car next to you.

I know Bluetooth isn't exactly the end of the world - but for me, since I'm on call regularly, it's a lot easier to answer my phone without picking it up or fumbling with buttons.

Wow, that must be frustrating, just a couple of quick questions if the link doesn't resolve issue;

Which carrier are you using?
Is the phone unlocked or jail broken?
Have you used the Bluetooth feature with another device? If so, when?
What was your purchase date of V?

Here's a link to a fix. Seems like you have went through these steps already. But just n case here you go.

I use Sprint. The phone is not jailbroken. I use it on a daily basis with other Bluetooth devices. I've also got a ton of other phones at my disposal from various carriers because of what I do for a living (which I think is was pisses me off about being talked down to by the SM)

They're all bluetooth enabled. None of them make the function/setup screen on my car work. I can pair my iphone up with other cars as well.

My V's born on date is September 2011. When I bought the car, my original phone was a motorola XT720. It paired up for a few days ok. Then the issue started. They told me it was my phone at the time. Trying to be congenial, I went ahead and got an iphone since I wanted one anyway. Same problem existed with my V, I can pair the same phone up wth other cars.

I can be wrong, I'll admit to being wrong. I just really feel that my Bluetooth system and or other systems are a little faulty at this point.

That attachment you posted says 'vehicle must be running' under there?
Do you ever see the car saying "Fuse on"? if so there's a switch in the fusebox set wrong.

However both issues you're describing, Eco-coach not working and the phone not pairing are related to the Bluelink unit and the head unit not talking properly to each other, the dealer should be able to figure that out. But please expand on 'Eco coach isn't working" what does it do/not do?

Of all the phones out there, the iphone pairs pretty much every time, so the issue is not the phone, but I also can see you making it more difficult to troubleshoot by turning BT off in the phone, mine is always on, and the car picks it up every time.

how does my BT on my phone being on or off affect whether or not I can get into the setup screen of bluetooth?

I left it on for months and it never helped. According to the person at Hyundai that spoke with on the phone - bluetooth is independent of Bluelink, at least systemtically. I should always be able to get into the setup of the bluetooth system regardless of whether or not my phone is on or off or with me. Even the techs at the dealer yesterday agreed to that fact. My problems may be symptomatic of another larger issue but none the less, that's what I was told.

The picutre I took yesterday was just of when the guys was pressing all the buttons. He did the Eco-coach button pressing while pushing phone and everything else. I just took a picture of it so I could remember what it said.

Eco-coach doesn't work for me as I can't ever get to the screen. It just always tells me that the vehicle must be running. I've never see anything about Fuse on or off.

I've think I've seen this issue before in another thread, I'll research. If it's a hardware problem (as the other thread) Hyundai will have to replace your head unit. This is covered by warranty. I'd recommend taking it to a different Hyundai dealership for a second opinion. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. GL

Eco Coach telling you the car must be running means the Bluelink module is having issues, keep in mind that the Bluelink Telematics unit has to talk to the head unit, so if the head unit is sick, both Bluelink Eco Coach AND Bluetooth modules could be affected, the head unit is the common denominator.

This shouldn't be impossible for the dealer to find unless they're completely clueless, the Ecocoach issue is 100% troubleshootable and repeatable, my bet? they'll find the head unit is sick and needs to be replaced.

I agree with that completely. Bluelink does have to talk to the headunit, but Bluelink updates don't fix an issue with the headunit if it's faulty. Putting me off with Bluelink updates has frustrated me.

Again sorry if I came off nasty, I'm just frustrated to the nth degree.

Sorry if I came off nasty; just been one of those days, weeks, months :)

The first time I tryed to set up mine,it just wouldn't link up.Then a couple days later I tryed again and I got 3 phones to work ( my tracfone,my wifes sprint & my dads sprint phone ).I to had the letter saying that I needed a re-turn on my bluelink, but had just gotten it done a few months ago.My tech adviser looked it up and said that for some reason they ( bluelink ) was sending these letters out and that I didn't need it.

I have the same issues. BT failing to start-up and Eco-Coach telling me that the car has to be running (while in motion at 45 MPH). I have taken my V in once already and the service department had to do a head unit restart. That worked for about two weeks. About to schedule a second visit. My V born on date is Apr 2012.

I had the same problem for about three days. Then all of a sudden it worked fine - I didn't do anything (although I was about to do the same as the OP and raise a raucous at the dealer). To my surprise, my XM also came back on, after the trial period had expired and I refused to open an account. When I had traded the car in, the XM was still working for free!!

My car is still doing it; I've had it in six times now and they still don't know what is causing it. Sometimes I have to reset it 10 times in a row before it will boot fully. Bluetooth doesn't work, ecocoach doesn't work, xm doesn't initiated. It's awesome.

It's been frustrating and there doesn't seem to be a resolution and they're not interested in replacing things "just to replace them". I've taken it to the General Manager and the Owner of the dealership. At this point, they can have the car back for all I care.

Place a call to the regional rep. for that dealership.

this just happened to me this morning. No response from the phone menu or the bluetooth menu, just says initialing or some bs. I seem to recall that similar lock up had happened to me with the same BB tour phone in my bmw and what fixed it was removing the BB's battery. Not saying it's the fix here but I'll try it today . . .

Just thought I'd update this thread since I seem to have finally gotten this issue fixed.

Guess what was replaced? The Head Unit. Thankfully I didn't have to pay that $3000 bill.

All the issues I was having? No longer there. I did get a somewhat less then enthusiastic apology from the Service Manager for doubting me.

The tech who finally pressured him to get it replaced noted "longer than average start up time and continued initialization of unit made functions sporadic or not available. Replacement of unit recommended." The tech told me I was correct in my original almost 9 months ago, so I feel somewhat better.

Just happy that it's fixed.

I've had my genesis for about 2 months now and it had been working great until yesterday. I started getting the same message as the original poster, "initializing Bluetooth handsfree" and nothing happens. It's not a problem with the phone, the actual system is not bei g able to initialize the Bluetooth in the car. I'm gonna take it to the dealership this weekend and see what they say.

"Hands Free"

I have had same problem: have done multiple car resets, delete/pair, including rebooting I4. Touching set-up and Bluetooth = duh! Follows voice command to dial, audio goes silent, then just sits there. If I find a solution i'll post it, but the dealerships do not have the knowledge to troubleshoot their code problems.

I had the same thing happen to me after 1 year.

I debugged the bluetooth connection suceessfully after trying a number of different options on/off.

From your iPhone, go to settings -> Bluetooth -> Veloster and uncheck "Phone Recent"

or

just clear all your recent phone calls, then force a reset on the veloster media system with the little button

I'm still on iOS 6, hope this helps others.

Thanks Vremix! I just starting having similar problems as the longer post by Featherlessbiped. The Bluetooth button when Setup was pressed did nothing, and every time I presses Media, it said something like "No playable devices found". Before this, since I purchased the 2012 Veloster, everything worked well. Not only couldn't I get the system to play Pandor and music on my iPhone 5C, I couldn't make or receive phone calls...all the while my phone said that it was paired with the car. Anyways, after hitting the reset button by the CD player slot a bunch of times and it not fixing the problem, I tried what Vremix suggested. As soon as I got in the car, everything was back to normal! :) I not only cleared all the recent calls on my phone, I also unchecked the "Phone Recent" box. Sweet!
