HVAC fan speed switch issue

Issue: Fan motor not responding to position switch setting
Repeat?: First issue of any kind with HVAC
Model: Tech with Auto
Mileage: about 7800
Bought: May 2012
Built: Feb 2012

Yesterday I got in the car, started it up, and the fan motor didn't seem to be on(A/C mode Max and Recirc). I moved the speed dial around, and it only worked on 3. I turned the car off and then back on. The fan motor worked, but not with the dial on position 4. When turned to 4, the HVAC system would shut off like in position 0. Jiggling the dial a little in pos 4 did nothing. If I turned the dial back towards 3, the whole system would kick back at 4th speed. I also found that if I pushed down on the dial in position 2(straight up), the fan speed would drop to about the speed of the 1. Let up on the dial, and the fan would speed back up. I only noticed this because I was wiggling the dial at various speeds to see if it seemed to be a loose connection electrical problem.

I'll see what the dealer has to say. I would assume that a replacement switch/module is in order.

I had to have mine replaced. In the morning it would work on 1-3, but not 4th. In the afternoon when it was warm out, I could get it to work on 4 by jiggling it. If dinking around with the knob affects it on any speed in any way, I'd say it's the switch on yours, too. Otherwise it would be (most likely) the blower motor resistor module. When that's the culprit, there is no amount of twiddling that will make any difference.

So TWO of us have had this problem? Then it's official: Veloster = POS. :p

Mine was ordered on a Monday, arrived in time to be installed that Wednesday. Too bad I couldn't get in until that Saturday... It didn't take too long to do, I think I waited about 90 minutes from drop off to drive off. That also included some time investigating the progress of the evap leak update that hadn't been released yet.

I have the same problem the exact same issues, it worked for a bit by jiggling it around. Now its completed done working, it has been a few months, I barely drive.

This car is the worst car I have ever owned! --- I owned a brand new POS SATURN too, wayyyy back in the 90s, so me saying its the crappiest car I have ever owned — speaks volumes to the lousiness of these Hyundai cars!

Mine is a 2012, has 92K(or so) miles on it, the transmission was replaced about 60K miles and about 65K miles the engine was replaced. Thank goodness those were under warranty.

This AC knob problem, ugh, and its obviously a problem with the manufacturing of the car. Hyundai should fix it for us. I live in South Florida, this summer has been brutal!

Thank you all for the suggestions!

Cute car, yes, garbage manufacturing, also yes.

I am thinking about pulling the trim and removing the module from it before I take it back in to speed up the swap. There is actually a TSB on the service website for how to remove that radio/vent trim bezel - you don't use that notch in the bottom left of the bezel

That might not be a bad idea. I remember seeing the TSB, and thought about mentioning it when I took mine in. (But I didn't.) I noticed today that the lower left (and the right, slightly less) notch on mine has some very mild marring where something was used to pry in there. Nothing noticeable until you smear some white interior protectant on it while detailing... It's nothing worth me complaining about, as it can't be seen when it's not being contrasted with a light color, but I remembered this thread and thought I would add my observation.

Nope make that 4 and 5 of us lol. My blower speed control switch was extremely positional to get it to work. Took it in to dealer and they took forever... I was allowed into the shop and the guy couldnt figure out how to take apart the dash. Explained how (as I had done it b4 for stereo mod). Once covers were off he replaced the part and went to put it back togetherwhen I showed him the wire connectors were scorched and should also be replaced. He put new ones on... And then within 2 months the notches to select the speed were worn out an it is again positional. Took it in and they are now ordering a new switch, blower resistor and motor and will be replacing all wires with a heavier gauge wire.

The blower switches are melting that's why they stop working.. this is definitely a Veloster defect. Also my stereo wiring in no way connects to or effects the blower wiring.

(2013 Veloster Turbo.... Owned 1 yr, at 80,000 km)

I had the same thing happen to mine. Just to let everybody know though (I know that this is an old thread), I've worked in auto parts for over 15 years and I can tell you that if the top speed of the fan is the setting that's not working, it's never the Blower Motor Resistor. The Blower Motor Resistor, by definition, allows the fan to run at slower speeds by resisting the current that passes through its circuit to the blower motor itself. The top speed is unresisted current and bypasses it completely. I think it's a safety feature so that a failed resistor doesn't mean loss of heat or defrost. If the top speed is lost without losing the other speeds, it is always the switch. If it were a problem with the main circuit, wiring harness or blower motor itself, all speeds would be lost. If the any or all of the lower speeds are lost while the top speed still works, then it is always the resistor.

HVAC switch

I replaced the switch today. took 2hrs. 90% of that time was removing the trim pieces around the switch. Even with trim piece removal tools it was a small disaster. The trim piece tools needed to be cut to fit the tiny holes to life the fascia. and the removal tool was not the cheap ABS plastic one. Nevertheless, the removal tools was a necessity but I still needed 2 regular screwdrivers. And lots of tugging and pulling. this is not a job for the faint hearted and it does leave some residual marks on the dash even when being careful.

Hyundai never did get the part on backorder so I sprung for $175 on ebay. *the original ebay "used part" was broken on arrival. I ordered the new part.

It's in and working now, and i hope Hyundai exchanges the broken part for the old one i removed.

patience is your friend here.

I had mine replaced in 2015 because the switch was "touchy" and only worked if I fiddled with it. It was replaced under warranty. I brought the car back this weekend because settings 1 and 2 stopped working this week but looks like I'm out of warranty. Was quoted over $400 to replace the assembly. Somehow today, setting 1 now works but 2 still doesn't. I asked the Hyundai rep why this part failed so much and his response was: we can't predict when these electronic components will fail. Twice in 2 years on a car with 42,000 miles on it does not seem normal to me. I've bought Hyundai since 1998 and never had a problem that wasn't fixed to my satisfaction, but if they cannot stand behind a repair they did 3 years ago I may jump the Hyundai ship.

My whole unit was replaced a year ago because a 7cent spring broke and the dealer said they don't replace parts just the whole HVAC.

Now a month ago my fan will only blow VERY gently if I put the dial halfway between 1 and 2 OR halfway between 3 and 4. It won't blow on any actual number or change speeds. It's so gentle you can barely feel it.

The dealer told me $400 to replace it agin... anybody have any ideas? I'm hoping it's a cheap part and quick fix for someone like me who can just about screw in a light bulb ?

Help please...
