About: 2016 NAV
Owner for 10 months
20k Miles (mostly highway)
Maintenance every 5k

Dealership: Riverside Hyundai

On a few occasions when placing the vehicle in drive the engine would only rev like it was in neutral.

On 3/27/17, I was picked up by Hyundai Roadside because my car broke down going up a hill. Just to clarify it is the same hill I drive up every day to get to my house. The next day the dealership tells me that one of the cylinders in the motor is dead and my cat was destroyed. Corporate Hyundai recommends the engine and cat get replaced so thats what they are doing. The dealership isn't willing to share anymore information about the cause of the problem and is acting like they know nothing and says corporate will do there own investigation.

I just wanted to share my experience thus far and also I'm curious how many NAV owners have had a similar situation and how it ended up working out and if the problem occurred again?

One thing, it's covered under warranty, and because of the low mileage, you can contact corporate and (if you don't have one already) get them to spring for a rental..

be polite but firm, be willing to go up the "Chain of Command" to get what you need, but whatever you do, don't be rude..

Your issue doesn't appear to be a common problem with the NAV, so I'd chock it up to bad luck, get the new motor, if that rev issue repeats, get them to spring for a transmission as well...
As far as info towards the cause, you can also get an answer from corporate for that..make sure you have the invoice number for the new motor in hand as well as the vin...

I appreciate your response MANT!. Ya, the dealership is covering everything and they put me in a Passat. Its really more of a slight inconvenience than anything. For such a bad situation, its a really good situation lol. I mentioned to the dealer a couple times in the past about the rev issue but they say the problem has to be duplicated for them to start a diagnosis. Ill try calling corporate in a few weeks after everything is done to see if i can get an answer from them. My concern is that the problem my lye deeper than the engine and cat and that maybe its computer or clutch related...

my personal opinion the two are unrelated. the DCT has a weird quirky behavior. but the engine/cat issue just shows the cat was blocked and the back pressure caused engine failure.

I thought about that too but shouldn't I have felt a difference in power and shouldn't there have been an engine light on?

Im no expert but I'm thinking that maybe the computer sent to much fuel into the engine and blew that and then excess fuel entered the cat blowing that as well.

28,600 miles and I'm left on the side of the road again... The service advisor told me on Friday that both the catalytic convertor and engine are both done again and they are currently waiting for Hyundai to approve the new motor. Meanwhile, I decided to hire a lemon lawyer since I really do like the car and believe the issues causing these problems are related to the ECU and dual clutch transmission, I will be asking for either the 2017 R-Spec as replacement or a full buyback. The reason for choosing the R-Spec is because it comes in a 6speed manual, doesn't have the bluelink crap and the MSRP is equal to the Veloster I currently own.

Hey, mikestuhh! Sort of hate to "like" your bad news, but glad you are sharing! Keep us posted! You've definitely done a great job documenting and keeping the dealership in the loop throughout which will hopefully be to your advantage! No one wants to buy a car with issues.

God damn you are hard on cars, i have around the same mileage in 5 1/2 years as you do in ~4 months, no wonder California is so polluted with such strict smog laws. Hope you get things sorted.

Ya, I've made sure to document well. I have many service records and the car has been 100% dealer maintained. Im hoping they don't give me any problems and give me what I'm asking for. Although, if they do happen to switch my car with the one I'm asking for, I will most likely be doing all my own maintenance on the new car from now on like I've done on all my past cars.

I talked to the dealership today. So far they have only replaced the cat. They told me corporate is requesting they disassemble my oil pan and take pictures for them.

I wonder what they are thinking the cause is? Last time they just threw and new cat and motor in and gave it back to me no question.

Someone close by! Riverside Hyundai is a decent dealership. Leo at the service desk took my 2013 NAV in no question for warranty work, even after I told him where I got it. As for the wait, I am sure it's due to the sudden failure of a rebuilt engine in less time than the original build took. I would wait, but call them at least once a week to "encourage" a progress report. I would also be calling corporate and asking to speak to the person who is handling the case. Because of your requests for a buyback or replacement, I am sure it is going to take an approval after all reasonable accommodations have been exhausted.

I agree, Riverside Hyundai seems to have good customer service. I haven't met Leo yet, so far I have dealt with Dave and Nick which both seem like good service advisors.

Yesterday, Corp approved the new engine and said that once they get the tracking info they will call me to let me know the ETA.

I am still in shock that this brand new car that I bought a little over a year ago is going on engine #3 and catalytic converter #3 in under 30k miles. At its current rate my car will have gone through 4 engines and catalytic converts by the end of warranty. I'm just ready to be done with this lemon.
