My guess since we have a 12 gallon tank & there are 12 bars on our fuel gauge, would be that each bar equals a gallon. The light comes on at 1 bar, so that means you have 1 gallon. Now comes the variable. If you are avg 25 mpg, I think it would it would be safe to say you have 25 miles left. Makes sense to me
I had this happen the other day to me as well. It came on at the 40 Mile mark for me, but i watched it and soon as it hit the 30 mile mark the display just said -- I assume they do this to cover their ass in case you actually do run out of fuel so they can't be sued. Needless to say i think i got her down to about 20 miles left till empty and still made it to the gas station. This was with a veloster 2015 Turbo edition
I was about a block from the fuel station that I usually fill up at and forgot to look at the miles remaining on the trip meter .
I've got 6 weeks of vacation coming up in 2 weeks, I think I might try some real world testing on how far you can go til the engine stumbles .
I'm also going to see if there is any difference in mileage between 87 octane and 91 octane, I've got a few trips planned and they will be on rural interstate highways here in the southwest US, put the cruise control on and drive for 5-6 hours at 70-75 mph, best case scenario for fuel comsumption .
A couple of things to keep in mind. You need to refill while you still have at least a quarter of a tank of fuel. Driving it to near empty will ruin your fuel pump -- it's as simple as that. 70-75 is not going to get you the best mpg's -- it will simply get you to where you are going. Humor me, and drive a few hours at 60-65 and see if makes any difference. The octane -- regular -- is all that is needed.
Yeah, I forgot about the fuel pump being electric, just recently got a vehicle with fuel injection, used to mechanical pumps !!!!!
This past weekend, I let the fuel level get low, the light came on at 47 miles remaining and the display went to -- at 27 miles left and I drove another 10 miles before refueling . .
So I figure you can go 30 miles before fuel starvation .
You also risk damaging the catalytic converter. The tank only holds 13.2 gallons. You need to be filling up when around 9.7 gallons will completely fill it. If you are getting good mileage, why risk damage?
There are actually two fuel pumps on the VT. A low pressure electric fuel pump in the gas tank and a high pressure mechanical fuel pump at the engine. You can hear the mechanical pump if you listen closely near the front of your car.
