Engine start stop and theft question

What happens if you start car via button [to warm it up/ get screen to defrost] and get out - I know engine continues to run but what would happen if someone tried to take the car - would it cut out when a certain distance from key fob? Ideal situation is to warmn car before leaving for work on very cold mornings but not wnat to risk it getting stolen!

Yeah I forget to leave my key in the car when I'm getting out washed all the time and from what I can tell until they shut it off the car stays running it just won't start back up , I think I'm going to test it out tomorrow

The Australian Veloster Turbo will go for roughly one kilometer, and will then shut down and unlock the doors, and the alarms go off

I think this is standard across all Hyundai keyless entry and press button start systems.

don't you need the proximity key to stay in the proximity of the car?

Mine does this really awful beep if I take my key outside of the car after it has been turned on via start button. I haven't gone too far from it to see if it shuts off though. I'm glad you asked this because I was wondering the same thing the other day!!

My girl got out with the key at a store and I went and parked pretty far away without a problem-only the beeping. I didn't try to restart though, have to try it out.

Thanks for all of your helpful comments so far. Agree about loud noise if you get out of car with key. Ideally car would cut out after certain distance from proximity key but AdelaideSRT suggests 1km! My car is a standard United Kingdom Veloster Turbo. Perhaps it is a safety feature that it cannot just cut out - but in a way that would be ideal to stop theives!

You can leave the fob part of the key in the car and pull the actually key out of it and when you leave the car, manually lock the door and when you need to come back stick your key in the hole and unlock the door. I've done it a few times going shopping and it worked fine.

There's no way the low power fob can communicate with the car at 1 km. These things are designed for very close range. See if you can unlock a door with the fob at 10 or 20 feet. If you can't do that then some other factor caused the shut down at 1 km.

Yes - do wonder if Adelaide got it right? Still have my initial query - will car cut out once beyind key fob range. More I think about it the less likely - would be good if you can remotely lock car with engine on - that way heater could do business on frosty mornings without fear of car being stolen

The car will go for 'about' a kilometer, without the proximity remote in it. As you've noticed, it will let out a loud beep if you get out and close the door while it's running - if you'd like to test it, leave your remote there and drive off... You'll get about a kilometer before the alarm goes off and the car disables itself. This has nothing to do with the distance from the remote - the remote is simply 'not in the car'. The salesman pitched this as if you've been carjacked, the pissed off carjacker is now 1km away from you - as long as the 'key' is in your pocket. My wife asked why it doesn't lock them in, too - we both asked if she wanted them to smash their way out lol

Another 'benefit' of it going one kilometer away, if the person who has the key is dropped off somewhere, at least you don't get stuck miles away when it stops, or get somewhere else and need them to come get the car because you can't restart it - happens a lot with beemers apparently, one person with the key gets out, they keep driving (it doesn't disable, just won't start without the key) - but then you can call assistance to have them started, too.

I don't know if the US models will shut off like that. As I understand it once the car is turned off it won't restart, but I don't think there is any time or distance limitation to engine cutoff. The feature as you describe it makes good sense, except for the potential of causing an accident when the engine shuts off in an awkward traffic situation.

I can vouch AdelaideSRT here, few weeks ago I dropped wife at her friend place, then cant find park so have to drive around. The car make noises but she already went inside and I'm blocking the traffict so I have to drive off with the noisy noise. After driving around for a short while (approx 500m-1km?) the engine shut off (IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!!!) but no alarm (mine is V+, not a VT). I need to do the "pretend something is wrong with your car and open the bonnet" manouver. luckily she's already done so we can took of soon after

Im guessing the AUS Velos may be different in this regard. I would think that "The Man" here in Canada and the USA would think that it would be very unsafe for the car just to shut off in the middle of traffic.

My Genesis will go basically forever without the key in it. I will however not restart without the fob in range. Someone shoudl try it with the Velo.

Easiest way to test would be to take the battery out of the fob after starting the car. That way you have the fob with you if the engine shuts off.

    No. Do this.

Start car and get ready to leave work. Forget your ID and run into the house to get it. Grab ID but leave key fob on counter. Drive to work and 12hrs later at 5am when its time to go home, realize you dont have the fob and the car wont start. Call wife and wake her up to bring you the fob. Sleep on the sofa that night and dont ever forgot the fob again.

MTD you are brilliant. I can't believe that I couldn't come up with such an elegant solution.
