As for the people talking about a buy back it's probably because the ohio lawsuit is asking for reimbursement and a buy back option. I honestly was worried the MPG numbers would come back to bite me later and it did. I'd sell my V, but I know I'll never get enough out of it after this.
same here, I would consider another car if it did not advertise 40MPG. I am not sure if I would go for class action but I am not accept the hyundai reimbursement.

A class action suit is a waste of time for everyone but the lawyers (and I work with lawyers). Furthermore, you lose the ability to have recourse later, should you need to. You probably don't even have much of a chance of getting that $0.12 check, either, since Hyundai/Kia have voluntarily made amends (if you don't get a big check--too bad. The math is consistent. Drive more or move.)

The difference in EPA estimate probably wouldn't have changed my mind. The Veloster is FAR better looking and comfortably equipped than anything else in its class. (Whoever was thinking of a Mazda 3 instead obviously didn't test drive one--ugh.) I mostly drive short little trips that are crap on mileage, so I didn't expect 40 mpg, and the result is way better than what I was getting in my '01 Intrepid.

I also plan on driving my V until it dies, so resale value is of little importance to me--if I can afford to replace it, I can afford to eat the little bit of value drop. For those of you screaming over the drop in value, you're viewing your car as a short term investment. Which is dumb. You don't invest in a car for it's resale value, you invest in a car for it's ability to get you from here to there. Otherwise, cars are terrible investments. You will almost always be on the losing end of purchasing a new car. That being said, now's the perfect time to buy a used Veloster. Even at the new fuel economy rating, it's a great car.

In the end, I'll be PISSED if the class action suits end up being opt out suits. I want nothing to do with them, if nothing else, so I preserve my later legal rights and the financial ability of the company to uphold my warranty. It's always a PITA to opt out, too.

As for failing to provide a level playing field, I have little doubt that it was a stupid mistake. With the random testing the EPA does, there's no way they could have gotten away with an intentional over-estimate long-term. If they'd done it intentionally, they'd have been risking quite a lot. Now...be thankful that it was an EPA fuel economy estimate, and not something dangerous--like GM and Ford hiding the fact that their vehicles were prone to explosions in the 1970s and '80s.

    Very clever!

But at what point did a little sarcasm become a huge soap opera to you? Seems a little odd.

Honestly, I just don't like feeling that I was lied to during the purchase process. I'm sorry that it so offends you.

    Relax.

And I know you will have another fantastic, well thought out response that doesn't really apply, but before you do that I just want to mention that I love the car. This is one of the first cars I've bought and felt 0 remorse about (other than the family minivan...). It is a hell of a bargain and it has a killer look. Again, I'm sorry that my not being scammed upsets you so much.

    Who lied to you?

    Huh?

Hyundai was in 100% moral and legal grounds when they said it gets 40MPG.

How were they supposed to honestly find out that what they tested and then what the EPA came up with months later wouldn't match up because THERE IS NO TRUE STANDARD FOR TESTING and the EPA in general is run by luddites who don't have the capacity to test every car?

So tell me, who lied to you?

If this had been marketed with 38MPG would you not have bought it? Are you saying that 40MPG mattered that much to you? Oh please. Go buy a Prius C then for similar money.

Are you also insinuating that you could get 40MPG consistently in all the other cars that claim to get it? Could you?

No, you couldn't. My Focus is rated at that magical 40MPG. As it stands right now both the Focus and Veloster are tied in the combined rating.

You are honestly acting as if Hyundai personally slapped you across the ballsack after they took your money.

What is 2MPG in the grand scheme of things? Dick all.

I wouldn't even be getting 35MPG combined with my commute much less 40MPG so all this does is lower a hypothetical number I'll never be able to consistently obtain anyways.

Yea, I've cracked 40MPG plenty of times before, so have others, thats not some set in stone rule.

If there is one thing the EPA does well is that they basically list a "Your mileage may vary" disclaimer and if you check the full specs you'll see that they actually list a RANGE of MPG that you are most likely to get. At least they TRY and make it moron proof.

So I'm sorry if you think that Hyundai has lied to you, you are well within your grounds to believe that a large multinational company really wanted to stick it to you over 2MPG.

Cause clearly they have NOTHING better to do.

Except that's not the case, while I don't disagree the EPA screwed up by not verifying results, there are specific tests that are required and Hyundai/Kia did not perform them properly according to the EPA requirements.

Yes there is blame on both sides, but this is not only on the EPA, they set the specs that the manufacturer didn't follow, then the EPA did not verify the self-reported results.

You better watch what you say on here...

People will slam you for giving an honest opinion like that since it doesn't match theirs.

And if you are really lucky they will even use the words Dick and Ballsack to make there point!

For the record, if you're going to try and sound smart, dick and ballsack don't get capitalized.

    Also, it is 'their'.

    Good day sir.

    I can agree with that.

I just don't follow the mentality that this is some witch hunt and that Hyundai should burn at the stake because of this.

As far as errors go sure this isn't great but I'd rather have a few MPG knocked from inconsistent testing as opposed to some of the more interesting recalls other cars get.

Yes definitely bought it for the advertised mpg and the looks. Was consering the smaller Accent for less money but the lack of availability in my area and the good looks of the V got me sold. I logged 35K miles in a year so every mpg matters alot to my pocket. I expect a lot out of my effieient daily beater so maybe I'll go Ford next time I believe they have one advertizing 47mpg both city and highway. I would not go back to Japanese cars. I've given them too much business in the past.
