Whoever actually uses Consumer Reports for anything deserves to have their man card yanked.

Especially when it comes to cars.

I have no respect for anyone that quotes CR as a viable source for car information on anything.

I mean, CR is what other car mags laugh at.

Not because they've trashed Hyundai and the Veloster; I've always hated their so called 'reviews' done by the same guys that review toasters.

I'm having brake issues as well. I'm having a freezing caliper replaced to fix my handbrake.

The really annoying issue I'm having is the steering wheel breaking down and the outer layer of vinyl peeling away.

They're probably the same people who are wanting to sue Hyundai for 3 mpg.

Hyundai ranks at #2 in that. BMW at #3 is most unexpected.
What I don't get is why Toyota is at #1 with 6.77% "red light reports" and $491 average repair cost. Hyundai shows only 2.38% and $272 average repair cost.

(Chrysler is #10 at 15.63% $288 while BMW is #3 with 1.38% and $502 so appears that percentage is weighed slightly more than average cost)

Their reviews, aren't the best sure. But their reliability data is one of the best unbiased sources you can get.

ironically my friend who is a Hyundai tech would claim the exact opposite that CR does. He tells me he has loads of issues with the Sonatas (might also be in part because they sell well and there are many of them on the road).

I'm always extra cautious to take anything I read with a grain of salt coming from CR and other larger companies that do reviews or investigations, this and that. If the methods are revealed than you can easily understand the results and make sense of them and take them how you wish but if they don't reveal then it gets sorted to the mass amounts of opinions you can get from anyone, anywhere. Of course I put a lot more weight when making decisions on reports/reviews where the methods are revealed and I found more sound than one that reveals just the results. CR usually does a great job revealing how they came to their conclusions so at least you know under the same perimeters, it was tested and weighted against its competition. So people can call bull on CR all they want but there is much worse crap out their that clouds people's judgement then CR.

Just to stir the pot, doesn't the guy that reviews the toaster (implied that he doesn't know much about cars) if he reviews a car with a sound set of testing perimeters have less bias and can be more objective in their review? The testing methods compare one model to another and rank them versus giving a review about a car on how they feel about this or about that. I like rankings when the testing methods are sounds because I at least know that A is better than B when under XYZ conditions, etc.

There are indeed a lot of Sonatas on the road which increases the chance of seeing it versus another model. Also, it really depends on each region and the people driving them, maybe the people that don't have issues just never bring them back in to dealership for anything.

Sorry for getting off topic, but there is another thread on the steering wheel issue. I am having the same problem with the outer layer of the steering wheel peeling off, and my dealer is replacing it under warranty.

Other than the occasional glitchy head unit, I love my velo! Mpg is a slight issue because it was misrepresented. The veloster still gets great gas mileage. I'm getting extended warranty and keeping mine

That's a great point. However, maybe the index, which determines rank, is also based on the severity of the code. In other words, maybe a code that results in a car that won't run gets a higher number than one that doesn't disable the car?

I can without a doubt state that this is the poorest quality car I have ever owned, but that's just my opinion. Here's my growing list of complaints:

    1. The passenger side window doesn't work correctly (Nobody has been able to fix this)
    2. The passenger glove compartment/windshield area rattles (Nobody cares to fix this)
    3. The trunk rattles as the temperature changes (I'm tired of adjusting the over-slam bumpers)
    4. The Odometer screen cannot be cleaned (I'll have to live with the dust or scratch it)
    5. The steering wheel is wearing funny and already has a tear (I'm afraid to even clean it)
    6. The threading on the seats are coming loose (No way to fix that....)
    7. The adhesive on the underside of the dash is swelling and visible (Surprise... Korean quality)
    8. Bluelink continues to be a sketchy service (I'd say 2 out of 5 attempts works)
    9. The GPS can't even find the car when I need it (Nobody has been able to fix this)
    10. Bluetooth constantly cuts out and fails (This happens even after the updates)
    11. Random XM errors when the weather is cold (Surprise....more Korean quality)
    12. The vinyl is pealing off the doors (Apparently they wanted to save their black paint)
    13. The car lurches in reverse (You have to warm up your car before reversing)
    14. The dash gurgles when the AC is on (Why not add a side of bubbling to the cabin noise)
    15. Random fuel odor in the cabin (This is not a problem, it's a feature)
    16. Backup camera won't hold contrast (It's almost as if it's failing)
    17. The fuel mileage could be better for a weak engine (Oh yeah... the reimbursement program)
    18. The license plate frames have fallen apart (Adhesive Logo + Hot Exhaust = Bad Idea)
    19. The front bumper paint is already peeling (Surprise, got to love that Korean quality)
    20. The outlet in the console seems to be poorly attached (Unplugging results in the whole socket coming loose)

I could keep going, but it's depressing enough.....

Then sell, trade or Lemon Law it and move on. Most people have little to no issues compared to that list.

TrueDelta lists the car as above average and most of the repairs that people listed were simple warranty items.

    Lemon law and move on?

I can list the SAME list of issues with my MKZ but I won't bother, since my car was a fluke in a rather excellent car overall.

    So is the Veloster.

    Hell, all cars.

You will have the few percent that work badly and leave a sour taste in your mouth. That doesn't make the car bad.

It just means the pissed off minority complained a lot more then the satisfied majority.

I intend to trade it and move on at some point. I realize that there are good and bad in everything, but it is my own perception that even if someone gave me another one, I would most likely encounter the same or similar issues. I believe that most people don't mind many of the issues, and it doesn't even contribute to their overall satisfaction of the vehicle. I have had similar experiences in other products where many thought it was great while others didn't. It probably factors into what type of person you are, your level of expectations, and what you are comparing it against. I suppose I went into the purchase with overly high expectations. Anyway, it is what it is and I won't hold back about what I think and my past experiences. While some many find it disturbing or discouraging to read about, others will find comfort in knowing that they aren't alone.

Here's the thing with Consumer Reports: They're goofy. But I see a certain consistency in a lot of their ratings. If they appear to have it in for certain brands, those companies may tell CR that their models are not available to CR.

I've been a subscriber to CR for a lot of years and am currently on the fence about continuing my subscription. I have a 2012 Veloster with style and tech packages and absolutely love the car. I know what it can and can't do on the highway. It gets the mileage it advertises. I got that mailing from Hyundai about the gas redemption cards like everyone else and I won't be getting the card, simply because the Veloster is a great car. My wife just bought her second Elantra. My son owns one and so does my daughter, and so does my sister-in-law. Hyundai makes a good reliable product. After all that, I couldn't care less what CR says or doesn't say about Hyundai.

Another thing about CR. We repaint our house from time to time. We've been in this house, our third, for 34 years. We buy Sherwin-Williams paint because it's the best. It covers very well with ONE COAT and lasts. On the other hand, we've bought Behr paint from Home Depot once or twice because CR says it's the best. Well let me tell you that Behr's best paint for interior walls is absolute crap, will NOT cover with one coat, and wears badly. Yet CR still says it's the best, while rating Sherwin-Williams far down its rating list.

That ought to tell you something about Consumer Reports. Gee, I think I just talked myself out of that stupid subscription.

CR review system is flawed IMO. Thet test various productions using basically identical methods.

Im buying a new TV. CR will give a Vizio a higher rating then a Panasonic because the Panasonic is more expensive, even though the Pano is a far better TV.

Im buying a Ferrari. A car that goes through the same testing as a minivan. A car that will get a lower rating because its loud or small inside.

CR testing is far too generalized.

Again, their review system is entirely different from their consumer feedback reliability reviews though.

Same thing happened to me on the DST shift. I found out there's a setting for DST in the setup menu. Once I selected it, it has been displaying GPS time consistently.
