Huyndai will be offering both a manual and a 6-speed DCT (dual clutch transmission).

A dual clutch transmission is actually a manual transmission with an automated clutch (it has no clutch pedal), so it drives like an automatic but gets even better gas mileage than a manual. It will also have paddle shifters on the steering wheel so you can shift yourself with them too.

You will pay $1000 extra for the DCT just like you would for an automatic. The DCT is the one that will get 40mpg on the highway. Manual will probably be slightly lower.

They are not offering a traditional automatic. Just about all car mfrs. are getting away from them completely in the 4-cylinder engines especially in the B and C segment (sub-compacts and compacts).

It would be easier to vote in this thread if "Automatic" was re-worded to "DCT" or "DCT/Automatic" since a DCT is actually a manual transmission but is perceived by the driver as an automatic.

In that case, I'm definitely going DCT.

Veloster with manual transmission for sure! Can't imagine driving a Veloster with a automatic, just won't be fun. Manual transmission lets you have more control and I find it to be really fun.

    Manual > Automatic any day.

There are a lot of benefits to DCT - fuel efficiency, fast shifts, better acceleration - but the complexity and newness of the hardware is concerning. On the other hand, having a manual transmission, while more fun, hurts resale value since very few people can actually drive manual these days.

I'm totally on the fence at the moment.

Manuals don't really hurt for resale value. They're just cheaper because they were $1000-$2000 cheaper to begin with.

I've found our manual cars actually easier to sell, yes the demand is lower, but the supply is even more so.

Definitely Automatic. No point in shifting a slow car.

DCT is definitely faster. The computerized clutch can operate alot faster than your left leg. Paddle shifting is also alot of fun.

Smaller the engine output the more important a manual becomes actually so you lose less to the powertrain. Not to mention more fun to drive for less money.

That said we're probably going to get the DCT for the Veloster and get it in stick when the turbo comes if we end up becoming a dual-Veloster family like we're thinking.
