Considering dct for my girl friend

Should i go with the dct instead of the manual? Having second thoughts about the manual bc of my gf. Id be nice if she could drive the v too. Btw my gf and i have been together for awhile and will prob be getting married soon. Im not concerned about "being stuck with a dct" after a breakup or anything.

If you really love her you'll help teach her how to drive a stick, solves the problem completely.

I'm really getting tired of the wife/gf DCT story, my sister and I BOTH drive a stick and enjoy it far more than an automatic, there are plenty of women who can, just because no one has taught her yet doesn't mean she can't enjoy it. I'm not picking on you specifically OP, this seems to come up a lot and it's just weird.

it was alittle soft but I could do with it. As for teaching my wife, yea I could have tryed and would have put myself thur " hell " and fought her all the way,but at my age,its better just to get the dct and live life in the easy lane..............

    daum straight man!

I tried to teach my wife in the Tiburon and it was a complete disaster! too firm for her and I thought she dropped the transmission a few times...I gave up went home and drank a few cold ones to ease the pain a bit.

Men and women do drive differently. But women DO drive stick shifts, and capably. Real men also drive automatics! Go figure. I suspect your inability to teach your wife how to correctly drive a stick is more at issue, rather than her inability at how to use a stick shift. Students fail when their teachers fail.

Tell the g/f to cowboy-up and learn. I taught my wife in an empty parking lot one afternoon and now she basically refuses to a sporty car without a manual. She complains all the time about the auto in our Elantra.

Wow. Such intolerance. There are many reasons to choose manual or automatic. I drove a stick for almost 35 years! But a time came when automatic worked better for me. I hope you won't kick your g/f to the curb should she experience problems driving a standard some day.

This is very disappointing coming from a moderator who should understand varying needs.

My wife typically prefers to drive a manual. Me? I usually go for the automatic. She's getting a DCT on her Style/Tech mostly due to availability. In the end... Who cares?

She refuses to learn!!!!!! If she was willing to learn, she'd be a pro by now and this wouldn't even be an issue. I feel bad enough as it is because she can't drive the RX-8. Decisions...decisions

Renesis, I don't think any of the males in here can accurately answer your question without seeing pictures of the girlfriend. Then and only then can an accurate answer be given!

Smart on both sides, I don't see why the other poster had an issue with that.
If after learning she decided it wasn't for her, then so be it, but now she has the information to make the decision herself.
My SO and I have always had separate cars with separate choices made in the purchases, but always both well suited to the way we drive.

RR gets props for offering to teach the SO, she declined, that IMNSHO diminishes the amount of complaining she can do.

I don't see how giving someone the tools to make a better informed decision is intolerance, if she decides after giving it a shot that a m/t isn't for her, she's made an informed decision, without knowing how to drive a stick and not being able to actually decide for herself it's like saying " I don't like to eat xxxxx" when you've never tried it, once you try it you can decide you don't like it.

I am not here to argue with anyone, but your point is only valid up to your second period; the remainder is just drivel of someone that has opinions that are baseless and cliché. /offtopic

Now back to your regualrly scheduled topic: Considering dct for my girl friend

How about this, do what you think is best for both of you...who cares what anyone thinks or feels on a site filled with opinions ranging from go for it, to your a turd about your conundrum...test both types out and both of you decide.

I'm in the opposite situation. My wife knows how to drive a stick, and I don't. I have no clue why anybody would want to change their own gears. She tried to teach me more than 20 years ago on her VW Golf, but I actually broke the car so it wouldn't start. At that point I decided that it wasn't worth the trouble. The only time it's a problem is when we rent a car in Europe. In that case, my wife has to drive. But that's happened zero times.

What will you be happy with long term?

It's absolutely absurd to assume females can't learn how to drive stick, borderline offensive when I hear comments like "they can't do it."
It is mostly the element of fear of learning something new and not having a good teacher to show them.

The Veloster is one of the easier cars to learn how to drive, clutch engagement is very forgiving and gear box is very predictable and easy to move.
Take the time to teach her properly, it will be a good bonding experience and will be a big ego boost for her to know how to do it.
Whether you choose an auto or not you both can say she can drive a manual trans.

We as humans are capable of much more complicated things that moving a gear lever and foot pedal.
Its not that you can't it's either you had a bad teacher or you just don't care enough to learn. Either way it's a choice but just silly to pretend like you can't do it.

exactly, as a woman who learned on a stick (one of my Mom's best moves, bless her heart) it has been one of the most useful skills I've ever had. Not only do I get to have fun driving, but anyone can throw me the keys to anything and I can drive it, yes even in those rare times I have heels on.

In fact there's a story where at the same general time frame I was driving a 3-speed, 4-speed, and 5-speed vehicle and boy was it hard to remember which shift pattern to use.
