Anybody have trouble getting up steep slippery slopes with the DCT transmission? Ours tries to shift at the wrong time and it breaks traction leaving us "not home yet". I might try using the paddle shifters to manually select 2nd gear and see how that goes. The car is fine but that tranny is NOT an automatic!
We just got 12" and it's still dumping!

Surprisingly, I've had no problems on slippery slopes with my DCT--our driveway is pretty steep, too. Going from a stop at a slippery intersection takes some patience, though. But, as long as you are careful not to accelerate too quickly, it's not a big deal. I'm using the original tires, though, so snow tires should make things even easier.

So I am looking to get Pacer 83B black steel rims with Altimax Arctic 205/55R16. Waiting for final price but I think a bit over $700. This sound good for a setup? GOT THE PRICE $774.11.

After the 10-12 inches of snow we got the other day, I know I need something.

Last year driving up a moderate slope with DCT wasn't bad... it was TERRIBLE. With people pushing it managed to get up, but only after deactivating the traction control and trying to manually shift. In fact the car freaked out and told me to shut it off, only to discover that the radiator fan probably burned out in the process. My last car was a 95 Honda Accord, manual. I kind of regret not getting a manual (just so the wife could drive), especially in situations where I'd like more control.

In fact, in general I have never had worse winter driving experiences in a vehicle, and I'll peg the blame squarely on the Kumho Solus 18" tires for the tech package. Just a few days ago we had our first minor snow in the Milwaukee area, and I once again had ABS kicking on at 10 mph and generally spinning the wheels all the time and looking at the blinking traction light... and this is while trying to drive like an old lady.

So finally I had enough, especially with Draco looming... so I went on tirerack.com looking for something better. And I know NOTHING about tires, but their handy package builder (and the reviews from here) led me to the 205/60R-15 General Altimax Arctic and their cheapest alloy rims. I ordered them at about 11am on Wednesday, and they came delivered to my door in Milwaukee, all balanced and ready to go the next day at 2pm from Indiana. Just incredible. I too skipped the TPMS merely because of price, and the local shop fortunately just turned the other cheek for me.

I don't need to extoll the Generals, that's been done in this thread already. We didn't get hit too bad by the storm, but I tried my hardest to wipe out in some slippery areas and it just wasn't happening, it's so night and day from the stock tires. My only regret is not doing this sooner!

Good choice. My abs kicked in this morning, even with winters on. God do I hate how hollow the abs feels in this car.

OK I will shut up now -- contacted them and asked them the price of going 15" with 205/60R-15 General Altimax Arctic --- $653.43 --- I think that changed my mine. Getting them put on Monday morning.

Good job. Drive safely for the conditions, take your time and keep your distance. Its pretty all common sense when driving in the winter. Its still amazes me when I see some a$$hat flying down the road and driving like its warm and dry. IMO most accidents in the winter are simply caused by someone in a hurry and not driving for the conditions.

Mine went on today. 16" Tucson alloy wheels with Hankook iPike w409 tires. C'mon snow.

I should've known "someone" would make reference to WRC tires! lol.

But speaking of this weather, while trying to get my holiday shopping finalized yesterday a $%*#$#!! ran into the back of my V! Not a single scratch on her until yesterday... My guess is $1k in damage. I've been too busy to take it to a body shop for an estimate but I know the rear bumper alone directly through Hyundai is about $350, bare. I'll get to the estimates after Christmas. What a joyous way to get me into the holiday spirit, NOT!

If it weren't so cold I'm sure it would have just been surface damage but the cold caused a hole to be cut into the bumper cover right next to the back-up prox sensor. I've thought about fabricating rear bumper diffusers instead of replacing the cover... I'm not sure yet which road to take.

Those D-Mack's are "only" something like 13/32, excluding studs. Impressive Grip, though....

Just got back from Lake Tahoe. It was my first time driving in ice and snow road condition so I don't know if the V performed well or average because I don't have anything to compare. I am using the stock Kumho Solus and it wasn't bad. I did use tire chain if there is warning, keep my speed under 40 mph, no sudden braking, keep 2-3 cars distance from the car in front. Only 1 time the car's front wheel did slip, but the road condition was really bad, so I decided to install the chain (was going to put the chain on the next rest area, but the road was really bad so had to do it on the side of the road and many other cars followed as well). I do feel kind of jealous with all the AWD and 4WD, makes me want to have one :P

Sometime I question people who were driving with 4WD and AWD in snowy and icy road condition while going 60-70 mph, is it really safe? Is the snow tires really make that big a difference? Will snow tires make a car drive in snowy condition like summer tires drives in dry road? Or is it just people doesn't really care about their life and other people's life until they got into an accident and start realizing how stupid they were?

Hi there, I am trying to get some help or advice regarding winter tires for my Veloster

I was reading the posts but I wish some human advice

Actually I had the #18 tires that came with the car. All was fine including the rain here in Vancovuer, but Definitely after the two spinning I did the other day (and I was going so slow and only hit the break) One in my alley and I thought ok, the problem is only here, the blinking light of traction, but the other was in the main road. I was lucky that I was alone in the street with no other cars. It was so icy the road, after I manage to park I observed other cars and they don't had major issues. Ok, I am going to buy winter tires but of course I read here about the possibility of downsize to 15.
But Canadian Tire and Costco both of them said to me that I will have problems with the brakes and they want to sell me #17 215/45/17 but they need to make an special order. Anyone who knows where in vancouver I could find the tires that I need?
what brand, what size 195/65/15? 205/55/16??.

    Thanks

I have the tech Veloster (18" wheels) and I put 16" winter wheels on. Plenty of people on here have done 15" as well. Off the top of my head I think 205/55/16 is the ideal size for 16s in this case.

Depending what Velo you have, a Turbo or a normal Velo will dictate what tires you can use. A Turbo can use a 16" wheels with 205/55/16 tires. A normal Velo can use 15" wheels with 195/65/15 tires. Not sure where in Vancouver to go, but you could even start at a Hyundai dealer.

Ya, I havn't had any problems driving in snow either, with the stock tires and wheels. Most people who know "how" to drive in snow won't have any problems. Snow tires are only nessasary if your streets are constantly covered in snow or ice, otherwise just an un-nessasary waste of money. Slow down and give more braking time and distance and you will be just fine driving this car in snow.
