...anyone know why this car is a such a pig when it is cold? Is it supposed to be so sluggish? I have owned close to 40 cars over the years and never ever had one act so differently when cold.....

It's the car's way of communicating to you...it's whispering "Please master, treat me gently until my operating temperature is achieved."
ECU limits boost until it reaches operating temperature. Does the same when low on gas to protect the HPFP.

.....more like: "please master, let's both pray together that we don't get crushed merging into >80mph traffic on the 6 lane highway during morning rush hour...."

yeah, this car is especially sluggish when the engine is cold.. It is to protect the engine but sometimes it is really bad.. Also when it is really cold and I am just accelerating slowly it sometimes gets really jerky.. not to impressed..

cant post images in sig FAIL
I've noticed the jerkiness too. Was driving up a pretty steep hill while the car was cold once (might have had 3 lines or so in the temperature gauge), and yeah, the car felt like it was pulsing a bit.

Limiting performance when cold is a atandard German thing and a few German cars don't have temperature gauges. They rely on electronics to do it. I haven't driven my turbo below about 20 degrees ambient yet, even in the mornings, and mostly 30 to 35. I shall see in the winter.
From the Hyundai press release
Hyundai injects street credibility into Veloster with new turbocharged engine.
During cold starts, the waste-gate remains open, which results in faster catalyst light-off for reduced exhaust emissions.
Open wastegate = low power
Temps in the teens in my neck of the woods means that I've become familiar with this "characteristic" of the VT.
cant complain too much about the car just wanting to ensure less engine wear is happening on start up, I had noticed this and wasn't quite sure but as mentioned above it was my first thought (car restricting boost/power). thanks Hyundai!
I noticed the same thing one morning. The next morning, I turned off ECO mode and the sluggish hesitation was gone. Didn't do any additional testing, and two cold mornings isn't statistically significant.

Yep, and it's a real gas hog also when it is cold. 30F and thereabouts.

I also noticed it's a sluggish pig when the engine is cold, and sometimes it is jerky. After things warm up it seems to have more pizazz.
