    How to combat exhaust soot?!

Okay well heres the downside of buying an elite white car:

The car was washed/waxed last week and has not encountered any rain(the "droplets" are from frost melting) But it looks FILTHY, and I cant stand it

Also, I've noticed that under hard acceleration, from standstill, that the exhaust gets sucked back towards the car.. Ive seen it a few times in the cold morning where all of a sudden the rear windshield is all fogged up after being clear.

Does anyone know of anyway to combat this soot? because its really going to suck for us lighter color owners

A moving vehicle creates a low pressure area immediately behind it as a result of the way air flows over it at speed. With the exhaust location of the Veloster, the exhaust gasses get sucked into this low pressure area (hence the soot and fogging of the rear window on the VT when it's cold). The centre-outlet exhaust looks fantastic, but this is the downside.

That's terrible, sorry to see that Prime. Only soot I get is around exhaust pipes and a little bit on the rear license plate.
Maybe extending exhaust pipes might help (see pic), I think they are tucked in too far behind diffuser.

I did have this problem with my E/White VT, but I found the faster I go, the less the soot. Cops won't buy that excuse though... trust me.

I'm still working on alternate measures to control where the soot ends up. A few ideas have worked "ok" but in time have not solved the issue as I thought maybe they would have.

Yes, the airflow around the tail of our cars is funky. That's part of the issue. I'm trying to work on a way to keep the exhaust airflow down and out instead of up and close to the tail.

This isn't easy not working in a fab shop anymore... DOH!

I think you may be correct. If we can alter the airflow about a foot behind the V, we might be able get somewhere. I would need a GoPro or a chaser vehicle to see if my "airflow changes" would be functional enough to maybe move in the right direction.

Maybe this will help. I just installed the Sequence spoiler. I'll have to see if I notice a change in soot build-up.

This question isn't about "soot" per se but I noticed again tonite on hard acceleration in my Turbo the huge exhast cloud I leave! I don't do hard accelerations very often (maybe once a week) but have noticed this cloud each time I do. I almost felt bad for the folks behind me caught in my Turbo fartcloud! Is it just the same exhaust composition (that causes our soot problems) but in greater volume or something else going on?

Do you really want to add a spoiler to direct some of the airflow down the rear to try to blow the exhaust down?

Well, I honestly wasn't thinking about the soot problem when I installed the spoiler. I'm just curious to see what, if any, effect it might have.

Haha I just asked this in your thread. Let us know when you have it for a little while longer.

But guys, I'm not asking this because of the exhaust tips. Thats what theyre there for and theyre going to get dirty, especially in a turbo car. As you can see, it is ALL over the rear of the car and looks very unsightly.

In the spring I'm going to work on a secondary carbon fiber diffuser for the exhaust to see how that helps. Untill then i'm open to ideas

I just noticed a gray smudge under the rear spoiler. A micro cloth and a good car wash detergent would not get rid of it. However, a quick cloth loaded wit WD 40 took it right off. I will need to wax this area to try to provide extra protection. WD 40 does the trick.

WD-40 is a wonderous product with a multitude of uses. It's a good thing for us the nearly 60 year old 40th formula worked!

I was thinking about this problem today, and something you might try is applying wheel wax to the bumper area. This wax is formulated to help repel brake dust and might help keep the soot from sticking.

I was talking to my brother in law this weekend about this issue. He is an engineer for BMW in their South Carolina plant. He mentioned the direct injection coupled with the possibility that the car may be running rich could cause the excessive carbon. He thinks that once a tune is developed for our cars (that leans out the fuel mixture) it would solve most of our problems.

I hope I remembered that correctly. Does that make sense to anyone else? I'm not super savvy on things like this so...
