Yes, our V's all run too rich to begin with. This coupled with DI and HC (in the NAV) make for lots and lots of soot production.

Even increasing 1 full point of AFR should get rid of most of our soot issues. I'd like to see a 1.5-2 point increase at WOT and a 3-5 point increase during cruising situations.

This should not be a problem if the engine is tuned correctly. Look at other cars on the road such a Mini Cooper, the exhaust is in the same location and the exhaust tips are clean and the rear end looks clean. My 2013 VT looks dirty all of the time. I also noticed a burnt oil smell at times when I pull the car into the garage after a long commute. I love driving this car but a lot of flags have come up that make me question if I should keep this car long term.

Why because there are carbon deposits on the fake exhaust tips? Its GDI, they run rich. Its a turbo, they also run rich. In its basic function, the GDI engine isnt alot different then a diesel.

This topic is so beat to death its not even funny.

Any oil will work including olive oil. For even tougher spots I use Pine-Sol. These two products remove most car spots including tar. Use sparingly.

I must say, I don't notice much soot on mine. And it's white. Tips get a bit of it but don't turn full black like the ones on previous vehicles.

Wonder if weather conditions variables affect soot production.

Climate and weather conditions are a few variables that affect the soot production. Commute time/distance, fuel used, driver habits, and other variables affect soot production as well.

Those are far dirtier then mine lol.

Also, premium or ethanol free fuel and synth oil can lead to a cleaner exhaust.

Been thinking a once a month thorough cleaning may help. Spray INSIDE tips with something that will loosen all that soot and then cover tips with thin rag. Then rev it up a up few times. That should keep our bumper fairly soot free for a month or so. Havent tried yet but next car wash I will.

    The interesting thing is this...

Upon doing my 2nd cat delete and cat-back exhaust several month ago, if memory serves me correctly, the carbon was like 1/16" (.062") thick on the inside wall of the inlet of the 2nd cat. That's a total restriction of 1/8" (.125") ID. That's A LOT of carbon!

So by going from stock 1.75" up to 2" test pipe and then up to 2.25" from there back it helped with any possible restrictions of carbon build up within the pipe.
