a gap penalty while not owning or driving a car???? that's nuts
I went from a 2012 Veloster (base) to a 2013 (style & tech) and my insurance doubled. Checked with a dozen other companies and was quoted consistently at the higher price with no explanation. The biggest increase was in cost for medical benefits coverage. Somehow, upgrading a year made other people more expensive to cover medically?
For those of you just randomly offering number, it will never mean anything if you don't have a location specified in your profile or you speak up.
off to the the dark side
ha - you might want to check out this thread I started a few months ago:
Insurance Premium Impact
A lot of people have been having similar experiences with regards to wacky insurance on the 2013 - especially the VT. Do a quick forum search on insurance and you'll find a few more threads.
P.S. I'm in the Chicago area and went from Farmer's to Geico - saved about $600/year on "A" type coverage (comprehensive and collision).

Ugh, I hate these threads. Too many variables. Here's a few for you:
- Age
- Gender
- Location
- Driving record
- Insurance credit score
- How MUCH coverage you are paying for
- Liability (state minimum vs. 100/300/100)
- Comp and collision deductibles ($0 ded vs. $1000 vs. no coverage)
- Uninsurance and underinsurance (none vs. 100/300)
- The little extras (emergence roadside assistance, rental reimbursement, death/dismembermet, med pay, etc)
- How many years you have had your drivers license
tl;dr: your numbers mean nothing.

Generally, you are correct. However, without trying to be argumentative, I think to say the "numbers mean nothing" is incorrect. I think it is fair to say that people use the internet to solicit and generate opinions from a broader audience than would be immediately available through their first-party contacts IRL. To that end, the OP had asked whether other people had experienced an unexpected increase to their insurnace premiums - I think we have proven that the answer, irrespective of the metrics you have accurately portrayed as being used by the insurance industry to measure risk and thereby assign premiums, is yes, apples-to-apples, people are experiencing an unexpected increase to premiums in their independent scenarios where the only known factor to have changed is the vehicle being insured.
Quit raggin on the guy for asking a reasonable question - and try to be helpful instead.

If people were actually giving a old car/new car comparison of their rates, I would agree with you. However, only one person other than OP actually gave the comparison that OP asked for, and another person just said "it's higher" without giving some numbers.
Every time I see one of these threads, it ends up boiling down to "I pay X/month." If you're lucky, they'll include an age or an insurance company.
I pay $180/month thru Farmers, but I live in a major city and my rates are justifiable because of records of a previous accident and moving violations, so what i pay is fitting right now.
Guys are you calculating "A Year" or "6 Month Policy"? Blackout Im also in West Palm and Geico quoted $1000 on a 6 month policy. I changed the address up north close to Orlando and it dropped to under 800 for a 6 month policy. West Palm is considered high rate cuz of all the accidents. I witness an avg. 2 accidents a week. My best advice is find a friend or relative that can hook you up with their address outside of the city.
I actually go back and forth to New York lately taking care of an elderly man but my residence is Florida wpb. Florida seems to be lacking in inventory. I finally got a half decent quote from progressive of about $800/6 month but I hope that stays if I am ready to buy with a vin # ready. Not sure if progressive understands turbo or not.

I pay 495 per 6 months. That's about 82-83 a month. But I do have discounts like my renters insurances saves me %10 and I have 3 vehicles on my policy. 500 deductible comp and collision. State Farm and I live in kentucky

I'm in Tampa, Florida. ...I"m 65 years old, drive a 2012 Veloster and have an excellent record. I'm with Geico and pay $860 a year for insurance... which I believe is way to high..in fact, I'm checking around and from what I"m understanding the best rates are with Libery Mutual for the state of Florida. Because I'm financing the car I have to have full coverage. The only other thing on it is rental reimbursement. Everyone I talk to tells me that the rates Geico is charging is way to high. Funny I should come across this thread tonight because this weekend I was planning to make some calls and some comparisons. Geico raised my rates 4 months ago, just before I bought the Veloster (I was driving an '02 Mustang GT.) When I called them to ask why my rates went up I was told that it was nothing I did, but that the state had raised rates and it was across the board for all insurance companies. I'm finding that hard to believe however since other people I know have much lower rates and drive new cars.
I'm paying $50/month with full coverage 300/500/300 including 100% glass, 30 day rental coverage, and a $50 deductible on my 2012 NAV.
I forgot to say I'm 41 and I've been a USAA member for 25 years.

I pay $110 a month and I'm 21, and this is my first car financed and first insurance policy on my own. USAA is the way to go if you can.
I love my Red/ Red interior Veloster. I think it has plenty of power (for me ??). I am not a heavy foot person. It picks up good on the street and the Interstates. I have automatic trans with Paddle Shifters. I live near Bradenton,FL, (West coast ) And I previously owned a 2003 Elantra GT ( which I loved) My Insurance for my New Veloster, was $50 less per year ! Mine is AMICA Insurance Co. I think the insurance would be higher for a more powerful engine.
I too HATE the looks of the Turbo Veloster Model !! That Black opening on the front is HIDEOUS ! They changed the rear reflectors from a nice neat rectangle to a Cheapo loo king large Round reflector like you used to buy for your pedal bike. Other front changes I do not like either. These observations are from pictures and one on the hiway. Also I get really good gas milage. Cruising at 50 mph without a/c,I get 47 mpg !! My driving the interstate at 65 mph I get 36-37 mpg.
Good luck.
Ron M.
I had a 2004 Elantra GT which looked very cool almost near the Veloster. The current Elantra GTs are just ugly to me.
Gieco is a ripoff, I finally found $850 per 6 months on Progressive for the turbo but I had to take max 2000 comp & collision deductibles in order to get it to that rate. They don't do full years only 6 months. Gieco wanted $360/month! ARE THEY F-ING CRAZY!?!?!?
I test drove the non turbo Veloster and then the turbo and I can't imagine driving the regular one after driving the turbo.
