I read some forums and didn't really see a straight forward answer, so my dealership put premium gas in my 2016 vt 7speed, I know they can take either or. But what improvements am I getting with the premium fuel if any? lol im just trying to see if its worth the each cents for the higher octane fuel.
Personally, I can feel smoother pulls on 93 octane (Shell V-power) but not a huge difference. If anything, burning a cleaner fuel will help in the long run with carbon build up on direct injection engines.
The VT has proven to do better on 91/93 but whether or not it is worth it is up to you. To me the extra 30-40 cents a gallon is definitely worth it in a car like ours. In a 5+ liter monster that gets 12-15 mpg.... Not so much
I've been a long time proponent of running the lowest octane that doesn't induce pre-detonation, however with the recent price drop in gasoline I experimented and have discovered my MPG has steadily increased running premium. So I'd say burn the good stuff if your budget allows.
The trouble is the lower the cost of fuel the larger the increased percentage ‘surcharge’ becomes. We pay 5c more for mid octane (89) than 87, and 5c more for premium (91) than 89. So premium fuel is 10c more (around 14.75% more) at the moment.
I certainly wouldn’t see that percentage increase in power.
I run 89 octane as I can feel less lag (and surging), but anything higher than that I don’t. As for keeping the engine clean I’m not sure you’re gaining that benefit on a GDI engine. The Shell fuel you use may keep the carbon buildup down a little on the piston crowns, but it’s doing nothing for your intake and valves .. I can do that using gas treatment every third tankful for way less money.
