So 2 summarize this thread, if you own a Turbo use 93, every now and then use 87 to get rid of possible deposits in the lines, or buy a cleaner additive. Only exception is unless you are tuned, then you will follow whatever your tune mandates. And try to give her juice from a Tier 1 not from Uncle Bob gas stations. Did I 4get something?

    Cool

I use 93 octane I used 87 and 89 before I made the switch. I noticed a knocking sound during acceleration ever since I have been on 93 never had any issues.

You should always run 93 on turbo vehicles, I run 93 with the BTR tune.

Use 87 and buy some fuel injector cleaner. Works great and a lot Cheaper then getting 89 or 93

Lets get this straight. Octane keeps the fuel from exploding at a lower temperature. On a high compression engine, say a K20 Civic Si motor at 11:1 it needs the 91 or better fuel to avoid pre-ignition, or exploding before the valves are closed. I know all the arguments about the turbo and timing above. They are correct in an older fuel injected type. This is a direct injected engine. Which means the fuel is put directly into the cylinders no a manifold where it mixes. It does several smaller squirts to allow for cool fuel to enter the engine. Thus keeping the heat build up during the high compression to minimum, by cooling it with fuel and thus avoiding the pre-ignition. Mazda SkyActiv motors run high compression with 87 octane with this type of fuel injection. Also because there is a lot more air being crammed in by a turbo the compression ratio on non-supercar engines is normally something like 9.5:1 or 9.8:1. A 2015 Focus ST is only 9.3:1. If the engine is high compress non-direct injection it needs 91 octane. If the engine is direct injection or lower compression then 87 is normally fine. Some engines like a Mustang will retard the timing for 87 octane fuel when it detects it to not damage the engine and thus it lowers power. From all the real research, emailing dealers and manufacturers and what not, this engine doesn't do that so anything better than 87 octane is just a waste of money. Any performance gains is all in your head. Oh and 0.1 second faster at the track is so little that it is still in the driver ability range. 0.3-0.5 seconds would indicate more performance. If you really want to know, take a tank of 87 to a dyno and test it. Then do a tank of 91 on a dyno. Then post the results.
