    Arrow Manual or Automatic...

    Hello all

I'm new to this thread, and new to any thread in general so hopefully you will bare with me.

I have been trying to get a Blue veloster this entire month in Ontario Canada, but everywhere I have gone has varied with their 'wait time'. 8 weeks seems to be the minimum I have been told and 16 weeks being the longest.
I have my heart set on the Blue tech package, but I also have the option of a Vitamin-C tech package with manual transmission that is on a local lot... And that is where my dilemma begins.

I have not driven a manual in 5 years, and I'm not sure if getting a new car and trying to relearn how to drive it will be such a good idea. Of course my obvious concern would be the fear of messing up the transmission as I familiarize myself with shifting/clutch.

Sorry for the long post, but I'm looking for any advice on here... Oh and of course, should I just wait for the blue? (This would leave me with also having to find a cheap car to get me through the winter since my current vehicle has met his maker recently.)

Since this is a pretty big purchase. I would wait and get the car you really want.
Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Thanks for the input. I'm 23 and I've sort of always wanted a stick, since they are more fun to drive according to everyone. But I'm not exactly confident considering my Canadian winter is only a couple weeks away... My friends tell me learning stick is a piece of came, but of course they already are stick drivers.

I'd wait too. I've driven a manual for 23 years. I guess you're whole life. The DCT is pretty fun in the "manual" mode. You can use the paddles or use the gear selector. Downshifting with the gear selector is very satisfying and up shifting with the paddles is also a cool feeling. Then when the spirited driving has to end because of traffic, just pop it back in auto.

Are you near Belleville? Only ask because I know they have a vit c, tech manual in stock. In fact someone was test driving it this morning round town.
Took delivery of my brand new DCT with tech in triathlon grey on 16th Dec 2011.

Thank you as well, I appreciate the feedback...
You're both right, I should just wait.
I have also considered the Genesis premium package... 7000 more, but no 4 month wait period.

That car pretty much can't be driven in the snow. I had read that and kinda dismissed it thinking I'd just get snow tires. I was lucky to have an honest sales guy. I liked the Veloster but the 138hp scared me so I was going to buy the more expensive Genesis. He asked if I had another car for winter. Long story short He made less commission off me and I got the only DCT the state at the time. Also, because of this crazy weather, we got snow here in Philly already. Back in October. The car drives great in it!

Really? Well that is definitely great to know. I have never driven in Philly over the winter, is it anything like a nyc winter? I ask because they tend to have an identical winter as we do in the part of Canada I am from.
I got off the phone with a dealer from another town who was going to try locating me one, but gave me the same story as the others... the auto tech package is on a very long wait period unless I opted for a grey, which would only be an 8 week wait. -_-

NYC is about two hours from here so the weather is pretty close.
When I was considering a Veloster I was going to try and get a DCT gray tech. I got close. They happened to have a gray style. It was one of two Velosters they had. The other was a black style manual and another guy was buying it as I was buying mine. That was a month ago and they still haven't gotten any more in. I would have waited for a tech but I had no car at the time so... I do wish I had that proximity key though.

That's too bad you weren't able to get the tech package... maybe you'll swap it out in a couple years for the tech turbo version coming out soon?
    :P
I have also considered waiting till the spring (since I have to anyways) and figure out how much longer at that point until I am able to get a Veloster with the Turbo... but I know myself well enough and I just don't have the patience for that jajaja. I just wish it weren't such a long wait for the blue.
Plus having to buy a junker for the meantime isn't exactly convenient either.

    Wink

I test drove both the DCT and the 6 speed and I chose the 6 speed over the DCT because it's such a nice transmission and my trade in is an automatic with steptronic, wanted a change. The manual is easy to operate for a beginner I found compare to the Genesis Coupe which I didn't like at all. I haven't driven a stick since 1993 and I was rusted when I drove the 6 speed but because it's such a nice transmission It didn't take me long to get use to it and I like it,cheaper to fix too, simpler design mean cheaper repair cost, cheaper price when you buy the car.
But If you think it's going to stress you out driving a manual than buy the auto. This one is fun too and no foot clutch to learn,no stalling in traffic.
I don't think you could cause damage even if you mess up a couple of times with the manual. it wouldn't take you long to get use to it,it works nice. Good luck with your choice !

I had to 'settle' recently for taking a red tech DCT instead of the orange I was going for. All the dealers in the area (I'm near Toronto) are saying the same thing as with you, 2-4 months waiting... the thing is, you seem to be interested in manual transmission but just a little afraid of the idea. It seems like anyone can make the adjustment to drive stick though with a little practice, and it seems like you don't risk too much wear on the transmission as long as you start practicing at very low speeds while you get used to the basics.

If you think you'd actually be happy with the manual car but are just a bit intimidated by the idea... I'd consider it, maybe see if you can get a chance to try out a friend's manual or something and think it over. But if it does feel like you're settling and you really do want the DCT, wait it out. If you already would need a clunker to hold you over anyway, waiting for the turbo isn't a bad idea.

Thanks again for all of your responses. I appreciate it, and I was fortunate enough to get some help from my one and only mother lol... I'm going to get a Sonata Turbo until the Veloster turbo comes out, and then swap it over to her.

In the mean time am going to practice driving stick, so when the time comes I'll know for sure what I am more interested in.
