Hmmm...2013 Turbo Veloster or 2013 Ford ST Turbo

Decisions, decisions. Anybody else with these thoughts? The Ford will undoubtedly be priced higher, but I do like the looks of it and has 247HP. Of course, it won't be available until later this year. I almost jumped at the na Veloster when it first came out, then decided to wait for the turbo, now deciding if the Ford would be worth waiting for. I have never owned either a Ford or Hyundai (except for an early version of the Excel which was the biggest piece of garbage ever produced in my book).

Not looking to bash, just wondering if anybody else here is in the same boat and has compared pluses and minuses for each...

    Thanks!

I looked at the Focus, but realized it's going to be a very common car. Indeed, 48% of all Focus models manufactured, including the latest, will be destined for fleet sales. But, obviously, this doesn't mean the Focus is a bad car. Quite the contrary. It's probably going to be one of Ford's best products, along with the new Fusion... It's just they're going to be a very common sight.

The Veloster is probably going to be a niche product and won't be as ubiquitous. Therefore, it's got a bit of cache and will be very much a head-turner for some time, especially when the turbo version comes out.

In terms of performance, the Focus ST will probably be the hands-down winner. I doubt a factory-spec Veloster will win a driving contest. But I do believe the Veloster Turbo will be the hands-down winner from a value-for-money perspective.

The ST will be an easy $5k more. More of a Speed3 or WRX competitor then Veloster. Besides the ST is hardly the most attractive and you can't outrun ugly.

I'm considering these two also, in addition to the BRZ/FRS (although admittedly different types of cars). The Ford Focus ST should be more expensive, but I think will easily win in power and handling. I would think the VT will clearly win for features/interior and MPG, and IMO the VT is MUCH better looking than the Focus. I've always been a Ford guy, but at this point I'm more inclined towards the VT. I expect test-drives will determine it, if I don't just immediately grab the VT on first sight.

I'm kind of thinking of checking one out also. I thought it looked pretty good at first, but in some photos I think it looks too much like a wagon. I'll have to see it in person and it most likely will come down to price. IMO it can't be much over 24k because you can get a lot of other interesting cars for around the 25k mark, not to mention a 305hp mustang for a little over 22k.

Ya I'm a ford guy myself. (own a '66 Mustang) I considered the focus— the tech they put in those cars is actually prolly a little more
Advanced. The my ford touch with sync and parking Assit which actually parks the the car itself. My ford touch has much better smartphone integration and even turns the car into a mobile hotspot.

What has really caused me to consider the veloster turbo over the ford is the Warranty, price, and uniqueness of the car. Still racking my brain on this decision myself because I am hearing a lot of good things about the new fords.

The lack of 2-DR options took them out of my consideration, I just got over a 4-dr sport wagon and 2-dr was a requirement, the V's quirky 3-dr was a huge plus for me.

Do you think the Focus ST will be that much faster? It will have more torque and horsepower, but its also almost 300lbs heavier. Just have to say I totally agree that that it is also ugly. The thing I like about the Veloster is that it doesn't look like an average hatchback. It doesn't have that bulbous look.

lol.. 40hp is ALOT.. if the veloster NA had 40 more hp, it would go from having a "slow" reputation, to being universally accepted as a quick hothatch. its the difference between 140hp and 180 (close to the turbos 201hp)

    Mmmm ST *drools*
I'm soooo not happy about this dilemma.
VT will be cheaper and have a better warranty. But the Focus ST is going to offer a better driving experience, hands down. I really like driving. I love driving. And for a car that may only get 4-5 mpg less...i'll happily take the 40 extra horses. Especially considering this is comparing a gen 2 car to a gen 1 car. The Focus ST will be far more dialed in than the VT.

Top Gear review of the previous generation ST. They liked it :3

I just wish the new ST would come in ASBO-orange :<

The Focus ST is going to be terrifyingly magnificent, from what I hear.

Actually I might prefer the ST over the VT, but for me it has one major drawback, 5-doors. I just don't want a 5-door, if Ford could pull their head out of their butt and send us a ST 3-door I would be off to the Ford dealer. Period.

If the Focus RS was brought to the NA market, I wouldn't even consider the VT. Hell, even the ST is very very tempting.

Ford has stated that there will not be a 3-door ST. Not here, and not in Europe. Since this is a global car, the 5-door hatch will be seen in 20 countries, unchanged.

5-doors isn't a killer for me. Hell, I drive a 4 door right now, and I love it! I don't have to get out of the car to let someone in the back. And I always open the back door to toss my backpack in after work :P I like sticking it on the floor, right behind my seat so it doesn't roll around when my laptop is in it. So having that door there is nice!

As for Price, it's estimated to be just under the GTI. In which case, the only thing the VT offers me is its uniqueness.
I obviously can't make up my mind yet, as neither car is out. But right now, i'm definitely leaning towards the ST. I'll happily pay the couple thousand more for more refinement and excitement. IMO of course.

You are luckier than I, as I hate 4-doors...

To me opening that back door just to toss my backpack in on the floor behind my seat is a pain, because then you have to close the door and then open the front door.
The nice long driver's door of a 3-door allows me to toss my bag into the same place, and saves me opening another whole door and then walking around it.
I don't move other people around hardly at all, so them back doors, they are just a wasted, but I really like the ST!

I definitely understand the feeling. Having a single longer door would be nicer.
However, i've owned a few two doors, and a few 4 doors. And having 2 extra doors has never been a disadvantage to me. If anything, it's just an extra convenience when I need it. When I don't use 'em, they're just there. When i'm driving, I never see them :P
