You are correct. It makes absolutely no sense.
But it is exactly the same answer i got from my Dealer.

I have installed the oem camera and it does display with the lines, if you can get into your test mode setup you can also turn the lines off if you like it better without.
Do you have a Non-Tech Veloster? Do you have the installation manual? What did the install entail? Thanks for any info you can provide.
I have the non tech veloster. The installation entails removing the radio and installing a t-harness that gives you a rca connector and power plug and running the wire through the vehicle and out the rear through a grommet. I would say average install time would be 1-2 hours depending on the techs skill level and how afraid they are of the insanely tight clips around the radio bezel. The hardest part of the install is getting the bezel around the radio unsnapped without utterly destroying the very soft dash.

Thanks Nichodemus! I've been holding off on the purchase, because I knew the previous cam only worked with the Tec head unit (camera). Does it come with install instructions? (Can't find any on the net). Also, can I asked what you paid? I found it for $230 here: Hyundai Veloster Factory Fit Backup / Rear View Camera
But I think it's just the camera, and not the install kit....
The one Nicho acquired did come with a pretty nice explanatory install manual.
And the one you found there, for that price it better come with all thats necessary for a complete install. And I guess it does if I were to go with the description they have.
Nicho, could you provide us with pictures of the finished product?
I'm really trying to see if there could be a way to just hard wire into the back of the was unit without that OEM harness. That's the only real piece necessary for it to display on that screen.
Or if that part alone came separate. Cameras themselves (and very good ones) can be found for around $50 all over the place. Having to pay $200 or more just cause of that little harness. It's driving me mad!

You should be able to hardwire just fine. The instructions even give you the pin numbers to tie into for the composite wiring and most cameras you can just grab your acc power from the cigarette lighter because the power supply at the radio is only 6 volts. On the 2013 Veloster Turbo like mine the wires were already pinned into the headunit and are most likely somewhere else in the vehicle also and I will know eventually when I remove the interior to do sound deadening exactly where the factory junction is. That will not be until spring though so for now I know you can hardwire it in at the radio harness pretty easily. I will call my parts guy on monday to see if there is any possible way to order a "replacement harness"for the camera without getting the entire kit. That would be awesome if we could.
So isn't the beauty of the unit that DrT linked to above that it just replaces the left license light? I assume it gets the power and reverse circuits there as well and then just plugs into the head unit?
For those of us with limited tech skill, it seems to me that $230 is a pretty good deal if it is really "plug and play". Thoughts?
The reverse circuit is already hooked to the factory radio and active. The radio just will not switch into camera mode until it has a camera signal hooked to it.
Hmmm. I like the way you are thinking.
I saw the pins indicators and such on the instructions but really couldn't make much of it.
At least in my head the real unsolvable piece of the puzzle is, how to get video on the display.
I imagined that power could be tapped from the same reverse light wiring so that it would power up as soon as you shifted into Reverse. But were and how do I go to get video as soon as that camera gets power is were I'm stumped.
Now, I was going to ask you about that. Was there something plugged into that spot were now the "camera harness" goes? The harness appears to be sort of an extension so it duplicates the same "input" now being taken up by it on the back of the head unit.
And yeah, if that silly harness can be purchased separately, that would be the discovery of the decade.

Turbo or NA.. It's irrelevant, it can be fitted on either. Requirements are few. 1. Veloster sans rear view camera from factory. 2. OEM LG head unit capable of displaying video.
If you have those 2 requirements you can use this.

It does not matter if it's turbo or NA. The camera is hooked up to constant acc power so it is on whenever your car is on. The radio already has the trigger from the reverse wire hooked up from the factory. The trick is you have to disconnect your battery or hit the reset on the radio once the camera is hooked up. It senses that there is video coming into the camera feed and turns the feature on because I made the mistake of leaving the radio turned on with the camera unplugged and put it all back together and the camera wasn't anymore and freaked out thinking I messed something up. Hit the reset and bam, camera feed working again. I am sorry that I did not take pics during the install . I did it on my lunch break and was in a hurry to get it done (busy this time of year working retail).

so nick my question to you is was it a pain in the ass to get the head unit out? and did you have to drill a hole for the camera?

The clips that hold the bezel around the radio on are incredibly tight. That was the only hard part of the install. The dealer install manual shows you putting protective tape on the dash where you need to use plastic dash tools and pry the crap out of it to break the clips loose. Once you get the bezel off the install is a breeze. You do not need to drill a hole as you can go out through a rubber wire grommet in the rear of the vehicle.
is it under the H or like the other one in the light?
