    Sun Roof Exploded!

I was on my way to work, 5:30am...driving down the freeway, and BAM! Sounded like a bomb went off.

I was one of 3 - 4 cars on the road, no one was really near me.

Hyundai was really good about it. They towed it to the dealer (I was afraid of the glass falling on my head), they set me up in a rental, 2 days later I had my Veloster back.

I'm not gonna lie...it was a little scary and I'm still kinda nervous driving it. But evverything is working properly, just one of those flooky things.

Holy cow! There must have been a flaw in the glass somewhere

    Wow! That's pretty crazy.

Looks like you had the sunshade closed (fortunately, for your safety), right?

No. It was early morning, still chilly out, everything was closed up. Thankfully I had the cover closed too. Who knows where that glass would have ended up.

Wow that's scary! I have yet to close my shade for purposes other than showing off to my friends. That would suck to have glass shower over you while your driving.

Wow. I am scared now... I am glad no one got hurt!

Could it be caused by chassis flex? What can hyundai do if there are more incidents like this? How can they reinforce the chassis structure?
People with no sunroof must be feeling relieved right now. LOL..

According to the dealer, I was the 3rd in AZ with some sort of Sun Roof broken glass issue, so who knows. This is the first car I've had with a sunroof...I really haven't used it much. We've had perfect weather too, I just forget it's there sometimes. All I can do is keep my fingers crossed, try not to be aftraid of it, and hope it doesn't happen again.

I have a feeling all the sunroofs will break soon or later. It could be a flaw in design or flaw in glass manufacturing. Either way I am keeping my screen shut when the sunroof is not open.

Get the sunroof tinted. If it ever shatters again, the tint film will keep the glass pretty much intact. Even if it does fall, it makes far less of a mess. This is a very nice safety byproduct of tint that most people don't even think about.

It's safety glass... even if that stuff rains down on your head it wont cut you. Not that you would want it in your eyes or anything, but despite the noise and mess it makes, its not dangerous stuff...

Holy $@^% !!! Good thing you're ok. And decent of Hyundai to take care of it! You said that there were two others in AZ with busted roofs? Were they in the same area?

It's possible the glass had a tiny crack in it before it was tempered. This would become a stress flaw and could possibly cause what happened. I've seen this type of thing happen in other applications such as a raquetball court glass.

Let's just step back a bit and not make such sweeping judgements, I seriously doubt ALL of them will break.

You drive a Miata with a SOFT TOP and you are worried about a sunroof. By your logic here you should be wearing a full face motorcycle helmet when you drive a Miata.

    Seriously!
