Noise from top end of motor

Hi! Sorry I haven't introduced myself yet but I wanted to get this posted up as I haven't seen a similar issue going through the threads on here. I just bought a used V this past weekend and its a 2012 with 10k miles. When I start the car or shut the car off I have a weird grinding and clicking noise right after startup and shutoff. I also get it when I'm driving at slower speeds/lower RPMs. I've been working on cars a long time and it definitely sounds like something in the top end of of the motor almost like something is loose or grinds. It makes a clicking/grinding noise similar to bearings rattling around inside. When I have the hood open it almost seems like something electronic goes along with it during start or shutoff. This isn't the trans issue is it? It's an automatic btw. It just seems like its in the top end... Anyone else have ideas? I plan on taking it back to the dealer this weekend but if I don't have to I'd always rather avoid that. Thanks in advance.

Lots of other users have reported these noises. I hear them too. It seems to be a normal thing with this car. But take it to the dealer so you'll be at ease about it.

It's your dual clutch transmission. This noise can be heard in any of the DCT models but some not as loud as this video. If you read the comments on that video they had a software fix that reduced the noise somehow.. Not sure how.. What you are hearing is the gears engaging and moving because they constantly move around anticipating a gear change or something to that affect. You can hear this while starting up because it does a diagnostic type of gear checking and shutting off the car it will do it for a brief few seconds and stops when it's done.

You also get a few electronic clicking noises when turning the car off, but from memory the manual says those noises are the electric steering etc shutting itself off

Thanks for the quick replies! I thought it might be tied to the DCT after listening to it in the garage last night with my Dad starting and shutting off the car. Ill have to hit the dealer and get the update applied. Mine isn't nearly as loud or often as in that video. Thanks again! Glad to be a part of the forum. Lots of great info to read through!!
