TestFest pushes 57 vehicles to their limits

Category winners in the 2012 Canadian Car of the Year awards were announced last week, with Kia and Hyundai taking home the majority of trophies.

The event, held annually by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) at Niagaraon-the-Lake, Ont., saw about 70 auto journalists test almost every new model coming to market in 2012.

Only models that are all-new, or significantly new, were in the contest. This year, 57 vehicles in 11 categories were entered.

Here are the winners in the event that has come to be known as Testfest.

Small Car (under $21,000)

Winner: Hyundai Accent Runners up: Chevrolet Sonic Sedan, Fiat 500, Honda Civic Sedan, Kia Rio5, Nissan Versa Sedan, Scion iQ

Small Car (over $21,000)

Winner: Hyundai Elantra Runners up: Ford Focus, Subaru Impreza, Volkswagen Beetle

Family Car (under $30,000)

Winner: Kia Optima LX Runners up: Chevrolet Orlando, Chrysler 200, Mazda5, Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Passat TDI Clean Diesel

Family Car (over $30,000)

Winner: Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Runners up: Chevrolet Volt, Dodge Charger, Kia Optima Hybrid, Mini Countryman, Toyota Prius V

Luxury Car

Winner: Mercedes-Benz C350 4MATIC Sedan Runners up: Acura TL, Buick LaCrosse eAssist, Chr ysler 300S, Infiniti M35h, Lexus CT 200h

Sports/Performance (under $50,000)

Winner: Hyundai Veloster Runners up: Buick Regal GS, Dodge Charger SRT8, Honda Civic Si Coupe, Kia Optima SX, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, Volkswagen Jetta GLI

Sports/Performance (over $50,000)

Winner: BMW 1-Series M Coupe Runners up: Chevrolet Camaro Convertible, Chrysler 300 SRT8, Hyundai Genesis R-Spec, Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, Porsche Cayman R

Prestige (over $75,000)

Winner: Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTEC 4MATIC

Runners up: BMW 6-Series Cabriolet, Jaguar XKR-S

SUV/CUV (under $35,000)

Winner: Dodge Journey Runners up: Jeep Compass, Jeep Wrangler

SUV - CUV ($35,000-$60,000)

Winner: Volkswagen Touareg TDI Clean Diesel Runners up: BMW X1, Dodge Durango, Ford Explorer, Range Rover Evoque

SUV - CUV (over $60,000)
