Why Hyundai Won’t Build a Full-Size Pickup

Jan 21, 2015 - 11:53 AM - by AutoGuide.com

Long rumored to launch a pickup truck in the U.S. market, Hyundai has stoked the flames with the reveal of the new Santa Cruz concept at the Detroit Auto Show.

A true compact pickup truck, it’s in no way a competitor to top sellers like the F-150 or even the new Chevy Colorado and it isn’t supposed to be.

'We are not exploring conventional pickups,” said Hyundai Motor America VP of product planning Mike O’Brien. 'Our competitors have been making full size pickup trucks, some of them for over 100 years, and they certainly know their customers and they make great products. It’s not reasonable for us to think we can walk into that market and have the same level of competitiveness.'

Hyundai Spied Testing Prius-Fighting Hybrid

Jan 20, 2015 - 4:24 PM - by AutoGuide.com

Hyundai is moving forward with its plans to compete with the Toyota Prius.

Last time we saw Hyundai testing hybrid prototypes, the cars were Hyundai Elantra GT mules that had been fitted with a hybrid powertrain. These new photos reveal that the Hyundai hybrid now has a body of its own which appears to resemble the aerodynamic shape of the Prius quite closely. Up front, horizontal grille slats, blue-accented headlights and LED daytime running lights are fitted.

Our spy photographer managed to grab a shot from below that shows off orange high-voltage cables and a sticker that tips off this car’s hybrid powertrain. A 1.6-liter inline four-cylinder engine is expected to power this car, hooked up to an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack. A plug-in hybrid version will arrive 12 to 18 months after the car is launched.

Jan 20, 2015 - 11:58 AM - by AutoGuide.com

The Hyundai Veloster has received an update for the Korean market.

While its not quite a second-generation model, the Veloster received some minor tweaks to its exterior with new wheel options and slightly different trim surrounding its front grille. The major changes can be find in the drivetrain, with the Veloster now equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) replacing the six-speed in the Turbo model. There is still a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 201 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque powering the car.
